I'm going to say Yes!

Sorry for random post, was on phone.............. I will explain...............

You are my "twenty something" person I know (albeit probs not the best person as you didnt know about Ninja Turtles)

But I watched a quiz show yesterday and a Twenty something person was asked which band had an album called the Joshua Tree.  I was astounded he didnt know. I mean we are talking the album of a generation here, not just "on ok piece of music".

So it then got me to wondering, is it really not considered a classic anymore, and can it really bypass people?!?!!? Clearly it can?

For me, I would guess it is like "Dark side of the Moon" by Pink Floyd, I dont even like PF, but I have listenend to the album several times (possibly many times) just to see what the fuss was about.

Just thought it might start a little debate?

Guy, I am frequently surprised by the lack of any 80s music knowledge from our resident young guns.  'Pride' by U2 (from a different album, but still a relatively well-known song) was on at DTD and Sean not only hadn't heard the song before, but couldn't guess at who the band was.  Plenty of other examples of songs that we'd assume are well-known that the 'kids' have never heard before.

I guess when we were growing up there was less choice on TV and radio.  We all listened to the Top 40, watched TOTP and were also exposed to music from the 70s and 60s.  Maybe the answer is that nowadays there's so much choice that people don't listen to what everyone else is listening to - but can watch the MTV channel that matches their music tastes and download the stuff they want without having to listen to the other stuff that's available?

The other thing Guy, is that we're getting old.  As has been mentioned on here before, the number of years between now and when Oasis and Blur were battling it out in the 'Brit Pop' wars, is the same as between then and when 'The Rivers of Babylon' was number one in the charts.

But I'm still amazed that Alex doesn't know who U2 are (unless it's a level).

The thing is, although U2 are a band from the 80s, they have continued to be a best-selling band through the 90s, the 00s, and beyond.  Maybe they never reached the upper-middle classes?

Their 2009-11 tour was the highest grossing tour of all time!

I believe Alex would be more likely to phrase it as " Prose from a Posh Extraterrestrial Troglodyte"

Meh I wouldnt use our friend Al as your 20-something-what do-they-know-marker. 24 and obv heard of the album. Not having heard of U2 is genuinely mind blowing, though I suspect even Al is levelling us here
