We reach the cash. Nothing too crazy happen between now and then and I maintain my stack. Table breaks and me and matey wish each other luck and goodbye. Until we get our seat cards. him seat 4, me seat 2. I decide I'm going to lock up completely. He doesn't show any sign of slowing down and I'm not gonna get into levelling wars. I'll wait until I have it.

Matey then spews more chips to Lynn Beaumont when he opens J6ss on button and put her in when she 3 bets. Didn't turn out well for him unfort as the lady had the ladies.

I haven't played a hand for a while and it folds to me in the hi jack and I look down at  three diamonds Two Diamonds. Lynn is small blind and a middle aged gent in the big. They both have around 80k so I make it 6300 at 1500/3000 as it seems like a pretty good spot. Only thing I have to worry about is being 3 bet by best mate but he is wounded plus the fact I can just muck if he does.

Folds to big blind who asks how much it is before calling. I don't put him on much as I think he will defend light against my "min raise". Board is  Two Clubs He checks and I bet 7600. Villian dwells and then counts out a raise to 17000 or so. He has 60k behind. Now I never think he has 2 pair here as his two pair combo's usually fold and top 2 probably 3 bets. I think his most likely holding is ace rag or a decent queen and this raise is one of those "find out where I'm at" I'm about to tell him where I'm at. I slide out a stack of blue chips and set him in.

He calls. Very quickly. Oh well. I have any 3 any 2 and backdoor diamonds.

He flips AQ.

Oh.

Ok.

They had been calling the all in's on the mike. Dealer announces "All in and a call table 6" I say "They don't need to turn up for this one" The table laughs. Hardy ha.

Turn is

River is one of those slow mo Kodak moments

 two spades

I wince. The table winces. The communal shout of "OOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHH" Villian looks like I've shot him in the bollox. He shakes his head. I can't look at him. That one must have hurt. He says something like "WP mate" sarcastically. I let him have his moment. He deserves it. That one was disgusting.

I play another hand with mate when he peels a raise. I have two black queens. J93 flop. I bet, he calls. 7 on turn. I bet. He raises I call. I then check call blank river but it is a bit of a sigh call as I think he must have it this time but I kinda have to pay him off due to him repping so very little on this board. He has KQ. This takes me to the heady heights of 450k. Guy who I believe finished 2nd opens I 3 bet Queens out of sb and he jams 150k. I call. He has AQ. This to take me to over 600k with the ave at 150. Board doesn't comply as it comes Ace high and I'm back down to 300.

Table breaks and I get moved to a much tougher one. Chris O Donnell who I know is decent moves with me and is one to my right. He goes onto win it and I'm not surprised. he has a good solid tourney game and is decent post flop due to his cash skillz.

The table also has Spencer Lawrence, a good Scandie. I lock up and play tight. I 3 bet Chris once from button with 82 green and it gets through then comes my exit hand which I don't beileve is anything but standard. I find out that the guy who bust me was Alex Ferguson. he stuck the hairdryer right up my arse and put it on max.

I open blind on blind to 14k at 3000/6000/500 with two black jacks. He 3 bets to 44k. Dream scenario. His sizing is quite big so it looks like it's going in. I make it 101k. He jams. I snap. He says "Shit" I think weeeeeeee he has abso shit.

He flips AQ. I'm done for. My nemesis. I don't feel confident. You just know in these moments when you play poker when you're gonna in and when you're gonna lose. Ace in the window. queen on the river. I have 2 bigs left which find their way in the middle with A3 against K4. 33rd. Feels like last but and it's a big BUT. I know the world is not against me. I know these things happen. And I know my time will come. Or not. As long as play my best poker and continue to make the correct decisions the flips and suchlike will take care of themselves.

On busting I decide I'm going to drive home. Before I go, I go to the bar to get some soft drinks for the drive home. Some drunk guy, who I believe was a plant to level me starts chatting to me:

"Hey up mate. you're not out are you?"

"Yeh....."

"How can you be? You had load of chips" Rub number 1

"Yeh it happens in tourneys"

"Where did you finish?"

"33rd"

"Wow you must be well pleased" Rub number 2

"Yeh....."

"How much you cash for?"

"1200"

"Wow. You must be chuffed with that" Rub number 3

"Yeh....."

"Minus taxi's you could quit work on that....." Rub number 4

"Yeh....."

"So mate....."

"See ya"

I move away quickly and get back to the hotel only for Dan (who bust very early) to tell me that we are parked in the wrong bay and I have a parking ticket. Fucking great!

Your trip reports are a fascinating read, keep writing please

You always include a lot of detail on significant hands. Do you make notes or just have good recall?

I struggle with remembering a lot of the information about a hand after 10 minutes has passed (this may, or may not be age-related - I can recall every shot I played in a round of golf for days).

My less effective memory for poker hands used to lead to my badbeat stories being long and even more tedious than most. Once I realised this I stopped telling them (mostly) and now try to limit my post-exit conversatiion to the simplest of formats. "AA no good", or "flopped the set, he flopped the straight" etc
