Yesterday I took the day off to deal the GSOP in Manchester with a few friends. The 20k starting stack comprised of 1x10k and 1x5k chips. Maybe a TD with a wealth of experience can give a few good reasons for this?

One argument for this was that it speeds the tournament up. I'm assuming this was a demonstration of irony. Almost every hand requires change from at least one player; this slows down the action, to standstill in some cases (not to mention how begrudgingly the change is offered.) The fish that want to limp call their chips off before the first break struggle to do so because a genuine part of their decision making process is how awkward it is for them to gamble without the correct change. What's ultimately wrong with having change on the table? Of course there is a finite amount of actual chips, but in most cases there are plenty of spare 100/500/1k denomination chips in the box, and these can still be raced off or coloured up later on.

Does anybody else share this opinion?

I think a 20K starting stack comprised of 1x10K and 1x5K chips is:

a) a very small stack
b) not 20K

(but yes, I agree)

Its fine for there to be plenty of change available.  But when your neighbour keeps asking for change and then keeps calling big bets by using lots of low denom (i.e. your change) chips, it is even worse.

IOW - if it's 1100 to call and you want to call, ffs use a 1k chip as part of it, not 2 stacks of ante chips that takes you 3 hours to count out.

2 x 5,000
6 x 1,000
6 x 500
8 x 100
8 x 25

seems about right to me. Having loads of chips and getting a monster stack is awesome. I wish more casinos would realise this. DTD used to be good in this regard but the last few times I've played you start with less chips than you used to and they're a lot more aggressive at chipping up. A shame.

Sigh at being taken to pedantic school by kinboshi.

The strange thing was that there were 12*t25 chips which I've never seen before and thought was a good idea.

Say a 12x25/12x100/3x500/7x1k/2x5k setup seems fine, and would solve a bunch of change issues. Wouldn't take much longer to set up, would be a lot less frustrating for players/dealers.

You were dealing my table yesterday, I thought it was you but thought I read on your blog that you had quit dealing so thought maybe I had you confused with someone else.

Def not enough smaller denomination chips on the table, every other hand someone had to change up 5k/10k chips and a lot of the time it wasnt obvious who had the most change to do it.

During the Monte Carlo heads up match I recently played with bracelet winner Matt Perrins, there were 280x 25k chips in play and 112x 5k chips, a total of 7.56 million. I thought this was sufficient.

Were any of these on your person during the incident that occured on Monday night?

Maybe if they taught grammar in Derby then I'd be able to comprehend and respond to your query.

In any case, these days direct all fan mail to my official Facebook fan page, Julia will deal with it there.
