What is a Dynasty League?

A dynasty style fantasy football league is a league where you retain most or all of your players from year to year.  This creates an environment which is very different from that of a redraft league.  By enabling team owners to keep players and build a team over time, there is a much stronger sense of team ownership, and success is achieved with a greater sense of satisfaction.

Mistakes or successes in a dynasty league can affect the fortunes of a franchise for years to come, just like in the NFL.  A dynasty league also facilitates trades, including trading of draft picks, and it encourages a deeper roster pool, so young ‘project’ players can be identified and groomed.

IDP was something I asked Curtis about last year. Basically, instead of drafting a DEF, you draft individual defensive players and they get points for sacks etc.

Havent heard why yet, but I'm assuming its not good for newbies and gives players like Tighty too much of an advantage as defensive players are not very well known bar the hardcore fans.

Thanks for that. The dynasty league would definitely cede a sizeable advantage to the better owners. It's not hard to see who's made the smarter trades and waiver pick ups this season. We all picked roughly even sides but the difference by week 13 in rosters was quite substantial. Obviously, some had good squads that just didn't perform, so it isn't as simple as saying the bottom eight were rubbish, but I certainly made a lot of mistakes in my selections through the year.

We can all pick JJ Watt or Mario Williams, but I couldn't tell you who the titans big DEF players are. An hour's research and I'd be fine for the first or second picks, so I'm not averse to doing it that way, naturally, for next season. I hadn't heard of most of the players I selected in the draft this year, apart from through internet research in the days building up to draft night.

Of the two , if we had to change, the defensive individuals would be preferable to the dynasty league, but I'll play next year whatever, as long as I'm not banned or fed up with blonde or something. Probably happiest with no big changes in format, though. I've had a year's run at it so have a much better idea of what to do next season.

I think Curtis is planning on setting up two leagues - one dynasty and one normal.

I'm dreading next year.

Can honestly see me entering shedloads of these.

I may be able to assist there, as I'm considering setting up a blonde Dynasty League to run in addition to this one.

Having played them for the first time this season, I'm definitely a fan, and there's a whole different set of issues to consider compared to a re-draft.

As for IDP, it's exactly what I feared, and doesn't add anything to the overall experience.  Team DEF is definitely the better option.

Damn you.

In, obv.

What's so negative about IDP? Or is it just too much of an advantage for Tighty et al?

It's actually no advantage for anyone.

Imagine the random element of picking a Team DEF, and then multiply that by 8 positions on the roster, and that's pretty much the experience.

Also, when someone gets injured, even one of the 'big name' defensive players, there always seems to be at least 3 like-for-like fill ins to replace them without too much drop-off, but you might as well throw darts at the names to figure out which one is the best option.

Generally, it doesn't add anything of merit to the overall experience to make it worthwhile.

Feel free to try one out, as some people enjoy it, but I just found it a bit 'meh'.

For those asking, IDP = Individual Defensive Positions, rather than a team DEF.

This!

Basically, in a D-League, you retain the rosters from season to season so the pre-season draft after season 1 only involves the new rookies coming into the NFL that year.

I really enjoyed it, and it gives you a whole new set of things to consider for drafting, free agent pickups, trades, etc.  For example, AP wasn't the undisputed No1 Dynasty pick at the start of this season as he has relatively fewer seasons left compared to some of the younger guys.  Similarly, for the QB position, would you draft Manning for whatever time he has left, or pick up someone like Cam Newton if you were drafting now?

Overall roster sizes are bigger, to allow people to have 'current' players and development players on their roster.

The plan is for this to be an extra league for anyone who wants an additional fix, but the existing redraft league will still be there too, so it's not a replacement.

Forgot to mention, that if anyone drops out of a D-League, the new manager takes over the existing roster.

I joined one in it's 8th season this year and inherited a roster with AP on it.  The first thing I did was trade him away for 3 players as the remainder of the roster were nearing death from old age.

I'd be interested in joining both leagues next year.

I'm in an NHL dynasty league currently in its 8th year. It is awesome. Ridiculously in depth (28 man active roster, 28 man farm) with 15 teams. You end up knowing a crazy amount of stats about some prospects who never play more than a handful of games in the big leagues but that's the beauty of it. It's the closest thing to being a real life GM that you are going to get. Definitely recommend getting involved to anyone who is interested.
