Our first pack-off breather, about 2 miles in at St Bees light house.

Gorgeous, heather-covered cliffs at the most northerly point of the walk and where we started to walk inland, away from the sea. The quality of light on an exceptionally overcast day doesn't really do it justice but you'll have to take my word for it.

A monument to the Coast to Coast walker on the approach to Moor Row, the last built-up area before the lake district. Around 4 to 5 miles from St Bees.

A posed shot in Moor Row of me eating what was possibly the worst flapjack I've ever had.

The photos dried up at that point on day one, as the weather and terrain worsened significantly. I seem to remember spending most of the afternoon stopping every 50 yards on the first steep climb and then literally risking, if not life, then definitely limb on the corresponding mud bath of a descent. The lowest point of the walk for me.

This shot was taken as we packed up after our first night under canvas. Spirits were lifted by the arrival the sun, although I was now facing the Lake District ahead with massive trepidation.

The weather improved through the morning until we entered the Lake District in glorious sunshine. This is the approach to Ennerdale Water.

The rather beautiful & rugged Black Sail Hut youth hostel. This marked the start of our first Lake District climb. Despite the magnificent sunshine, I was full of dread for the ascent ahead.

A view back down the valley we'd just climbed up, with a rainbow on show. This was probably the high point for me. My fears for the climb and my ability to do it had been unfounded. I did have to keep stopping to rest the legs but I was able to go a bit faster than Geo, so by the time he'd caught up, I was ready to go again.

A massive gap in the photos now. The third day was when Geo fell and we had to curtail the day and miss the next. We arrived in Shap and got digs at a bunkhouse due to the torrential rain and us both developing dodgy stomachs. This was the view to the rear of the bunkhouse. Is it a Gypsy caravan Tom or just a copy?

The day's walking from Shap to Kirkby Stephen is when I first developed blisters and, not to put too fine a point on it, Geo shat himself. Bad times. Another bus the following day from Kirkby Stephen to Keld (the halfway point of the walk).

This was taken on day 7, walking from Keld to Reeth on very sore feet. A view of the River Swale on our trip down Swaledale.
