I was a thoroughbred mathlete in primary school , we played a game involving the multiplication table up as far as 12x12, you would stand back to back with your opponent and mimmick that its a wild west shootout, the teacher would shout 7x9 or something the quickest person to draw their gun and turn and shout out the answer was the winner, I was unbeaten and unbeatable! Good days!

i was also that guy.

still am, if I'm honest Wink

Yep, I'm still lethal at my 12 times tables too! Did yous play the same game or just something similar?

Apologies if it's already been mentioned on this thread but I thought it'd be fun to share something I learnt last week.

0.999... (recurring) is exactly equal to 1

Discuss.

awesome. how can they possibly make it zero? making it 1 is an understandable mistake, zero however is distinctly worrying especially for an FD

I assume accountants use excel all the time, tell them to stick 40+40*0+1 into a cell and see what happens

It displays 40+40*0+1    Wink

I think I mustve done that about 6,000,000 times in excel - it interferes with what you are doing all the time (the latest version is unbl for poking its nose in), but never says "are you doing a sum?" when you miss the =.

so what's the right answer then?

If you are "smarter than a 10 year old" it's 41.
If you're happy with primary school maths, seems 1 is an acceptable "opinion."

Why would primary schools teach incorrect maths?

Maybe for the same reason they teach incorrect spelling?

Monkey is spelt Muki apparently.

actually, the limit of (x+1)/x as x --> infinity is 1, which isn't quite the same Wink

Gatso's guna love this...

I asked a lass I work with who did A level Maths, she said 1.

I also asked another accountant, she said 1.

I asked the head of another department, she said 81, then 0.

I finished by asking the new "whizzkid" F.D, he'll know it surely, ermm, he said 0, then looked a bit puzzled and asked what I thought it was Smiley

Tax accountants wouldn't offer an answer, they'd ask the most important question

"40+40x0+1" - hmmm, what would you like it to be?"

Actually using converging sequences to demonstrate this can lead to the misconception that they're not equal, but they are

Is that because 1/3 * 3 = 3/3 = 1 and 1/3 = 0.3333r therefore 3/3 = 0.9999r??

I like maths.

Alex's explanation seems to have some merit...and it's based on the idea that you take the limit as I mentioned above.

not a real maths nerd like, so i could be wrong...
