Could somebody kindly explain how the 'comp' system works in Vegas cardrooms?

Two types AFAIK. Start off by getting a players' card (all the hotel groups have them) and they are essentially points cards like you get at Boots. Every time you spend money on gambling, you rack up points (doesn't count for poker BTW).

The standard one is as you rack up points, you also accumulate a small 'cash back' pot, that you can redeem against a hotel room balance, for example (charge stuff to your room). There are levels of card as the points accrue and the second Tier in MGM casinos gets you a queuejump to the buffets (useful for the Bellagio buffet, eg). The higher you go, the better the perk.

If you're playing a fair bit of roulette or blackjack, you hand your card over before you play and the people in suits will log your average bet size and how long you play for.

After a few goes at it, you can pop over to the office and see whether you qualify for a little bit extra - a chunk off your room tab, maybe a free ticket somewhere.

The hardest thing to do in Vegas as a Brit (other than win money) is to be cheeky and ask for stuff. The Yanks find this second nature. Be a Yank.

I'm guessing there are a fair few people who know more about the comp stuff than I. They'll help you more than I've said and might put me straight on a point or two Smiley

That's the gist anyway

Most of the main cardrooms use the Genesis Bravo system.  When you sit down, the dealer will swipe you in (and later out) on your player's card.  Typically will earn you about $2 / hour depending on room.  Later in the trip, if you want to eat at the table, you can get "In room dining" (or a chip runner if they don't have in room dining) to order food for you and take the points value off your players card (still tip them)  or you can go to the desk and ask them to write you out a comp for $x if you want to wander off to a restaurant with it.  Don't ask for more than you are likely to spend as you won't get change.

If you happen to base your play in one of the less popular cardrooms that doesn't have automated player management system at the table, you are going to need to introduce yourself to the cardroom manager.  If you have played a lot, and are recognisable to him, he may write you out a comp for the buffet, or a comp with a max value for the cafe or food court.  They don't generally give these away very easily.  Other options are simply to ask him for a line pass (gets you into the invited guest line) which means you won't be stood in the buffet line for an hour longer than necessary, you will be back raking in his poker room.  Or, you could try waving a $5 tip around and see if that loosens up his pocket with the comp vouchers in.

On the subject of Genesis Bravo...they have an app for that. With up to the minute info on games running LIVE.

It's not totally comprehensive as some rooms are using the system but are not yet listed on the app itself.

For Tournament info I love the AllVegasPoker app.

All of the WSOP time festivals are in full swing when you get there on the 22nd, so you'll be spoilt for choice tournament wise. In the first post of the thread, near the bottom is a google doc of everything going on in Vegas during the WSOP and links to the individual festivals too.

Re comps MGM properties have stand alone comps so for each hotel you earn those comps in you can only spend those comps in and then you have to ask the cardroom manager to write you out a voucher for that amount to spend at a certain eatery.

Caesars however have a system where you can spend your comps in any of their casino by handing your card over even if comps have been earnt elsewhere including Atlantic city etc.

Of course MGM have better rake and better card rooms IMO.

I have chosen to apply for a caxton dollar currency card as a way of taking funds out there with me but please feel there is any other cards or a better option to take funds out there with me http://www.caxtonfx.com/currency-cards/.  I will be staying in the quad resort formerly known as the imperial palace i have chosen this as it allows me to keep down expenses and the room was completely fine the last time i stayed there last year and is also in a central location on the strip.  I have been to vegas twice before 1st time was not for poker and 2nd time i was only there for a week so this will be my 1st time doing it properly.  Right now i am buzzing about it all and cant wait to get out there i actually travel to america on the 2nd june to see my mate in orlando then i leave orlando on the 4th june to go to new york to visit my other mate then fly from new york to vegas on the 10th.  I also plan on taking a trip to area 51 while im there i have already been to the grand canyon.

Hope to catch up with some of you out there please feel free to give me any advise.

Thanks Conor

ha yes just seent that feel free to reply to this on here then lol!

Hi mark thanks do you think it is a better deal with this card as opposed to the caxton currency card?  Also yea ive never been downtown in the 2 trips i have been to vegas so not really sure what its like there the reason why i picked a few tourneys downtown is as they are 6 max and its my favourite format.

I think it is good that you have put a decent breather inbetween each tournament.  I think it unlikely that you will stick to things perfectly, but that's fine, this is just a framework.

For instance, you might be buzzing to play one day.. fine go ahead and play.  You might play Wynn and the numbers might be terrible, so you might decide to not play there again and switch things around a bit.

I think deciding to play multiple venues is good, you will quickly find for yourself which venues you like/don't like.  Some people would love to play NLH $200 buyin 100-150 entrants every day.  Others want larger fields, bigger buyins, etc.  It doesn't take long to figure out where you are likely to find the right sized field/buyin/venue combo to suit.

That's fine but be aware that using it in a casino ATM will involve extortinate fees (more than likely).

I've never had a problem using US$ travellers cheques ANYWHERE in Vegas either for paying for goods or cashing for walking around money at the casino cage.
