The early game today is West Brom v Fulham

I have been watching Gareth McAuley the last few games on highlights packages etc and in each of the last few games he has hit the bar or hit the post from corners.

I keep an eye on Gareth because he is part of a (usually lossmaking, to be frank) stable of high priced FGS candidates and an ex Leicester player.

Today he is of interest because, Hangeland apart, Fulham are susceptible to height and furthermore are not defending well full stop (though we can put part of that down to the absence of Schwarzer organising the defence)

If you remember we were a crossbar and a mis-directed header away from scooping on Huth and Shawcross against Fulham a couple of months ago, albeit minus Hangeland that day

McAuley in various places (Ladbrokes, Bet Victor for example) is 28-1 FGS 1/5 E/W so just under 6-1 anytime

As I say, he's up top for every corner and free-kick every game

He has 21 career goals in 300 games or so but only one this season so its either A) due or  B) A complete banzai

If this is done its only a £5 e/w job.

oh and this isn't really a recommendation, more thinking out loud, but West Ham v Norwich today is 5/2 the draw

6 of the last 7 meetings between the two have been draws

That might be irrelevant, frankly, but combined they are seven games without a win currently. Norwich in particular have to shore things up at the back first and foremost

Thread made some £ on the draw and 0-0 last time out at Carrow Road

that day, the pair wouldn't have scored if they were still playing now...

mccauley is a decent threat in the air

personally i think any value in his price has gone, when he first went to wba he was generally a 40-1 shot sometimes 33-1 and on a rare occasion even 50's

I'm glad that is not a recommend! We would have got on it it were, so I'm pleased.

As you point out, the fact that 6 of their last 7 meetings have ended in draws is irrelevant.

5/2 looks a decent price though, but for some reason, I have an aversion to backing the draw in football. No logic to that, obviously. Wink

Happy New Year to all Tikay's Tipsters!

Back at you old-timer!

When did we last share a poker table? Helsinki 2005 maybe?

If so, that was the €2,500 jobbie, 25,000 chips, 2 hour clock affair where I managed to disgrace myself by exiting in Level TWO v J P Kelly, who I KNEW was at it. ......His quads were good.

Worse still, I had just paid for a drink for the whole table (cost me €38), as it was all a bit quiet. I busted just as the Valet returned with the tray of drinks. Marv.

Flushy & Stu Rutter were there, too, in fact Stu Rutter Finalled if I recall correctly.

His interview on Sky was uncomfortable to watch. I'd be surprised to see him retire after today but he's surprised me by carrying on for the last few seasons.

It's been well-documented that he's not had the most settled personal life over the last year or so, so maybe he is thinking - with the crowd probably cheering for the other guy today - it is time to zip up his arrow case for good.

Darts crowds, however, are vulgar, fickle beasts*, so a few 180s and they'll be walking in a Taylor wonderland again.

Thanks Rich.

When arguably the two best football brains we have, certainly in the facts & trivia department (you & horsey) have varying opinions, it puts me in a spot, but I think I've resolved it in a satisfactory manner.

I have placed the £5 "FGS" with Betfair, & got over 40/1. (See below). So that, I think, satisfies both parties.

I then got 10/1 for him to score ANYTIME with Laddies. Pretty sure someone will tell me I have got this right round my neck......

Gareth McAuley, WBA v Fulham, FGS, £3 @ 44, (43/1), Betfair.

Gareth McAuley, WBA v Fulham, FGS, £2 @ 42 (41/1), Betfair.

Gareth McAuley, WBA v Fulham, ANYTIME goalscorer, £5 @ 10/1, Ladbrokes.

RIP

Terrible news, though it appears it was a merciful release from suffering.

He used to be President of MCC or somesuch, I believe.

He was very much the odd one out on TMS, the serious one, the genuinely posh bloke, but he spoke & commentated with tremendous authority & knowledge.

RIP.

Morning Mr T.

I was a little perturbed to read Mere Novices report that my tennis girl had probably feasted too much over Xmas. However Google has assured me that Swedes all eat fish for Xmas so I have backed her again tomorrow as she is next playing an American who no doubt had deep fried turkey.

I should have stuck with nitty yesterday as that bit came in easily.
