I see stoke are > evens (again) to win at home against a team that are worse than them. This time against Palace. I am struggling to see what the bookies know differently that makes them that price.

always fearful of putting anything prem related up but surely this is a bet and possibly a big one too.

any comments??

Don't ask questions.  Gift horses and mouths spring to mind.  Are they bigger than 6/5 now then?  They were 6/5 earlier.

6/5 with Puppy power. Fred can get on at 23/20 with Billys. I have read that 6/5 is the standard price for a home team when the teams are evenly matched, so I reckon 23/20 is still value by a long way here. I'm still a bit reluctant to put this up as a recommend; I do not have the stats to hand that the bookies have, but Stoke have been formidable at home. Maybe they are having a ManU type season where their stats do not reflect their results so they are continually being overpriced.

Anyway I've only had £20 in the end and recommend the same for Fred

Palace are reborn under pardew. They have goals in them and the stoke defence hasnt been good this season, shawcross may be back though but wollschied is out. 6/5 about right IMO.

Whilst i agree Palace are smoking right now that recency bias is what is probably creating this price on Stoke as Stoke quietly go about their business as usual.  I don't buy the Stoke defence argument at all.  Stoke have the 7th lowest goals conceded total in the EPL this season even though they have had huge long term disruption of their settled back four for the vast majority of the season in comparison to previous seasons where the keeper and back 4 were virtually unchanged for the entire season (esp the two centre halves - Huth and Shawcross)

I can't see how you can call it recency bias.  Pardew has only had 12 games, so all his games are going to be recent.  His record on the last 6 was much the same as the first 6 and about the same as Stoke's last 6.  I guess the Pardew effect is going to fade as the season reaches its close.  Sort of how Newcastle did under him when their position is assured.

Dunno if 6/5 is value, but that 40 point bet looks good on palace right now.

I'd prefer to term recency bias as form. And form is what we study to make assessments on these games. Palace are the form side over stoke. Its just a very close game to call. Very close. Home advantage may win the day.

damn, Tal beat me to it

Iam slipping.

Day off today and I've just watched countdown, so I'm all alert and wordy.

You just had a bad draw, Tighty.

had to stop watching countdown a while ago

too many people were choosing more than 3 vowels in their letter choices

unless you get a really rough run of three initial consonants (and consonants should always be your first choices to give you some strategic flexibility in subsequent picks) you should never go more than 3 vowels

because it began to make me feel so unhappy, i had to desist from watching

I only get the chance to watch it once in a supermoon these days. It seems to me that four vowels is the equivalent of a test team bowling two feet outside off stump; negative tactics to stop the opponent from catching up.

Conversely, I'll never understand why University Challenge teams don't take a little longer when they're ahead going into the last few minutes. The fourth member of the team who never says anything should be on clock management duties. They could slow the captain down with "oh, hang on. It could be...Boticelli...no! Oh...artichoke? No. Gone. Sorry.", finishing just as Paxman loses patience.

You'd incite UC teams to get involved in time wasting? Shocking!
Whatever next? ( can't come up with a humorous example - please insert your own)

Not time wasting; clock management. Percentage quizzing. It's a sign of respect for your opponents' ability to close the gap if allowed to do so. Play it like Rubenstein, rather than Tal: don't give them a sniff.

It's like when people on Eggheads choose their best guy against Kevin on History. No understanding of what it takes to win. If there isn't a food and drink round, sacrifice the one who's in your team purely because they filled in the form or they're driving. Apologies if that's what the Blonde team did!

Don't get me started on the early round dumbing down of Only Connect in the BBC2 series!

the blonde eggheads team made a terrible tactical mistake

we sent Andrew into the lions den with kevin on politics last round before the final

horrible decision making under the tv lights

needed to send claire in, accept the probable loss (nothing against claire, but we all said at the time we had made an error) and hope andrew and i could handle the final round

If you get through to the third section, when Tighty gives his first answer of 1996, having given an answer involving the level of commercial success of the Olympics that year, CJ's face is an absolute picture.

Only topped by the double fist pump when Chris gives the wrong answer. Cheesy

the production assistants encourage the contestant to give some extra information with their answer, string it out a bit

thats my excuse anyway, and i am sticking to it

Sick nitroll on the "1st Cousin" answer, too.

"Are you including Aunt by marriage?"

No, Judith. If she divorces your uncle, she's not legally your aunt anymore. That's kind of how "aunt by marriage" works, really.
