I've often wondered that. I think the Dubai and Qatar events are just vanity projects for the local royals who can afford to pay for them but very few events seem to get decent size crowds.

I've often wondered that. I think the Dubai and Qatar events are just vanity projects for the local royals who can afford to pay for them but very few events seem to get decent size crowds. Sponsorship. Companies spend fortunes backing tennis tournaments. There's so much TV coverage, that it commercially it makes sense for companies to back tournaments all over the world. Tournaments themselves are also tasked with finding the sponsorship. If they can't, they go.

A company recently paid £50m for the rights to provide official scores from WTA tournaments for 3 years.
