My ire is reserved for this man

"where's the cue ball going?"

Its going to towards the pocket John

shouldn't be on the coverage

the rest i like. Hendry, Parrott and Davis the best insights and dry humour

Feel the commentators box could sometimes do with a non snooker pro, a broadcasting man for the lightness or phrase and touch that they can have

You not busy enough, Tighty?

In a tough spot with Iceland to qualify in tonight's ESC semi-final.

Ten of the 16 go through and I do like Iceland's chances. However, we've missed the 3/1+ and the best price now is 9/4.

Will leave it out there.

"where's the cue ball going?"

Just lol.

How many times does he say EXACTLY that, every bloody year.

As you note, it's going towards the pocket John......

I like commentators who tell you what is going to happen, rather than what just happened. Compare it to golf:

"Tiger's in a difficult spot, here. Although it looks straightforward, there's a sharp break about ten feet in from left to right and it will head downhill after that, so pace is crucial. If he hits it too hard, it could go ten feet past and he's left a tough putt to save par"

You, as the amateur, then get to sweat it with the player. We can all tell the ball going in is good and the ball staying out is bad. It's like gymnastics: two feet together good; stumbling backwards for one step is ok but not great; two steps or more backwards or falling on your face bad.

I like that about Willie Thorne. Hendry definitely seems to have picked up that mantle. I will add another one to that: Alan McManus. For those who saw the PTC event on ITV4 a few months ago, he was brilliant in the commentary box. When he boxes up his chalk, I'd love him to do more on mainstream coverage.

I think the Golf commentators, generally, are MUCH better, yes.

PS on the Snooker Commentary.

I found this "Rate the Snooker Commentators " thing via good old google.

Note the almost universal dislike of Mr Virgo, & paticular reference to "WHERE'S THE WHITE GOING".

And guess what - that was SEVEN YEARS ago.

That's what I mean by it needs freshening up.

They do remind me of a favourute of mine in that thread - Mark Wildman, I always thought he & Clive Everton were as good as it gets.

E/W bet suggestion if I can garner any warmth from the horse experts, Royal Shot 17.40 Fairyhouse currently best priced 20/1 with BetVic. Seems like whilst not guaranteed it would not have to improve much on it's last run to stand a real chance here. Paddy Power pay 5 places but not giving anything away at 12/1 currently.

http://www.oddschecker.com/football/english/premier-league/sunderland-v-west-brom/first-goalscorer

we were discussing the game at the weekend

the draw is into 11/5. both teams need a point etc etc

Coral go 14-1 no goal-scorer, three points above the next best available

I suggest this is a bonkers price for a small interest

would anyone be surprised to see 0-0 here?

Tikay,

This price is wrong. Get as much on as you can please. We can do something with it later.

Yes, agreed with the golf commentators. Telling you where they need to hit the ball, because of the advantage it gives them on their next shot or putt, really helps enjoy the moment, and anticipation of the shot ahead.

Conversely some of the gurus in racing are amazing hindsight commentators, expecting you to marvel at them giving you critique on sectional breakdowns after the event, and how you would have expected that horse to perform off that slow pace, yet never mentioning this wisdom pre race. Then talking about breeding and now telling us that X couldn't have won due to the lack of stamina on the dams side after the race. Roll Eyes

Best commentator/journo horse racing job has to be Ken Pitterson in Weekender, only ever has to sum up a race afterwards, and always gets to menetion how well the winner looked in the paddock beforehand, and how poorly the beaten fav strode to post, and when its beaten 50 lengths give us pearls of wisdom such as "I would be wary of backing it next time out". I want that job next.

I thought Ken Docherty's commentary on the snooker was pretty good, at times even adopting a "whispering Ken" style, I think he's growing into the role.

Virgo should go back to "Big Break" and his "comedy" routine, and I wouldn't mind if he took Dennis Taylor with him who's another "where's the cue ball going?" specialist.
