Apologies if this subject has already been done to death but any views on the chances of Joe Root for SPOTY.

There seems to be a lot to like about his chances. Number 1 batsman in the world, talisman of the Ashes winning heroes, seems to be very popular and comes across as articulate and actually appears to possess a personality.

Obvious dangers are Hamilton, who i think firstly isn't particularly popular and suffers from a lack of competion and Chris Froome who may perhaps suffer, unfairly, from the drug rumours that circle around cycling. Other than these two I suppose a stellar performance from a British player in the Rugby World Cup or an athlete in the world championships could throw up a further contender as could a concerted campaign similar to the one behind AP a couple of years ago. but thats a chance I'd be prepared to take.

Its also worth remembering Freddie won the award following the Ashes victory in 2005.

Really struggling to see Root out of the first 3 and was genuinely surprised to see him at 10/1 with Laddies.

It's that hard to predict night tomorrow known as the 1st round of the League Cup.  Anybody got any local knowledge on how strong a line up their respective clubs will field? - these nuggets are really useful.  I'd hate to price these matches up as a bookie and there is always a couple of League 2 raiders who conjure unfathomable results on this evening every season.

Quite like the prices on Barnet at Millwall and Luton home to Brizzle.  Both of the higher ranked teams will be focused on promotions/consolidation in their respective divisions imo.

Root would win it over Broad with 21 wickets and counting including 8-15 on the morning that really caught the imagination?

wondering out loud.....

My worry would be that the cricket vote may well be split down the middle between Broad and Root, maybe a bit for Cook and Anderson too.

thats a fair point

froome, hamilton (enormous petrolhead vote whether you like him or not), a cricketer/both cricketers and if england win the rwc whoever stars in it. outside chance of athletics championships gold medalists

my current entirely consensus shortlist

Id happily back Root to outpoll Broad at 5/6 each off two. Accept he's bowled well this summer, but only one headline performance and a rather Marmite personality against possibly the most popular English sportsman this year?5

Fair point about the cricket vote being split but realistically only 2 cricketers are going to make the shortlist as the bbc like more sports to be represented.

Danger of them picking up team performance of the year, as opposed to an individual winning?

Likewise. I backed Freddie in 2005  aftertiming but he was the standout performer. This year is equally soft but could make cases for those above, plus maybe Stokes.

Re: League Cup, I might have to back the Creepies tomorrow. Darragh was shouting at his new puppet to make subs 10mins into the game on Saturday. Nobody does wheels off quite like Poshies.

How much do you want? Happy to lay up to £1200 to lose a bag if you are.  Pm me how much you want if you don't want to post on here bet size. Rules as follows. If one player makes the final ten for spoty votes and the other doesn't the one who does is obviously the winner. Neither make the final ten the bet is void.

In before someone says this qualifies as having a 'huge ego'!!!  Offer is obviously open to others up to a combined grand Liability.

With regard to spoty i think muzza is a cracking bet at 14/1. If he wins the Davis cup and the U.S. Open he must surely be weighed in. Let's not forget England have beat nothing winning the ashes this year. We have had two or three passengers in the team and still hosed up.  The Aussies have bee over rated and shocking beyond belief.

Is Fred still unrestricted with Hills?

Apparently they've been using the big stick liberally in the past week or so.

I've had a solid account there and always seemed to be offered a fair bet but I got an email stating I was no longer eligible for offers despite rarely taking advantage of them. I think the big stick info is correct

How good or bad the Aussies  will have zero relevance in a spoty vote

Good start for Sunderland bottom backers the mad man that is mvilla sent off in the u21s. Not banned for senior side but and indication of how hot he is to handle .

Saying that the french national midfield was built around him 5 years ago so he will either keep them up or be a nuisance

The 2015 US PGA Championship will be played at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin from 13-16 August. Martin Kaymer won the tournament when it was played there in 2010.

a big old long links course

in the eight renewals since the Bridgestone was moved forward in the schedule to be played ahead of the USPGA, the worst result of any PGA champion was Martin Kaymer's 22nd place in 2010, before he went on to win at this year's venue Whistling Straits.

So there is a reasonable correlation for form this week to performance into the USPGA

can we be thinking about a portfolio for this one please?

What type of player should we be looking at?

Here are the top 24 at Bridgestone with best price.  It would cost £54 to back them all to return £100

Branden Grace   82
Brooks Koepka   45
Bubba Watson   16
Danny Lee   100
Danny Willett   108
David Lingmerth   115
Graeme McDowell   232
Henrik Stenson   28
Ian Poulter   198
Jason Day   14
Jim Furyk   53
Jordan Spieth   7
Justin Rose   20
Keegan Bradley   133
Kevin Na   237
Lee Westwood   227
Patrick Reed   66
Paul Casey   92
Rickie Fowler   25
Robert Streb   100
Russell Henley   250
Shane Lowry   55
Soren Kjeldsen   400
Steven Bowditch   237
