I'm not qualified to judge the winner.  I can pick some I like if you want?

These days, I take all my shots in RAW and do all the post-processing work in Adobe Lightroom. So this came out the camera in colour, and I've converted it - you can fiddle about with settings a bit to get nice contrast, but generally B&W works much better if the shot is nicely contrasty, which is why I decided to go with it for this one.

So I can't really help you much with in-camera B&W to be honest; just a question of picking your subject I think, the rest will depend on what you can do in the camera. That said, if you've got an SLR that will take RAW, I'd HIGHLY recommend Lightroom, pricey though it is. I took about 80 shots that afternoon (held the button down during some sledging runs!), and I imported, keyworded, classified, removed the dross, tidied up, did some minor post-processing on the reasonable one, in about 30 minutes. Then used a plugin to export to picasa. Does mostly the same for jpeg shots as well, but you leave a lot of your options open in RAW.

Just spotted this post. I have some 'actions' for photoshop that help make a nice B&W version of shots that aren't washed-out.  Will dig them out and upload them for peeps.

OK Boshi. Time to choose a 'winner' and pick a new category.

A winner?  Surely blonde and photography are the winners!

Oh I agree. I'm just going by this post from the beginning of the thread.

It's not like it will be that competitive.  How about Boshi chooses a catagory for this month, the perhaps the "winner" could just choose the theme for the following month?    Could always have the person chosing the winning photo rather than putting it to votes.

I still don't think we need to pick a winner, just a new theme.

Don't worry. The category is in addition to posting anything you like.

Good god, that poor woman...I thought my roots were bad.

Ever wonder what was going on in their minds when you take those random shots Tom?  If it weren't possibly dangerous and probably a little nuts, I'd say get yer sneaky shot and then walk up to them and ask.

I've considered the ethics of it Dawn, and I've concluded that so long as I only photograph people in public doing what everyone can see them doing anyway, it's OK.

...

Which makes me think - it's a good theme for now, but I'm thinking when it gets hot and sunny we should revisit this theme again   Grin
