I had a big post here but i've removed it and have altered it to a simple poll.

This is a one night freezeout tournament. Assume the buyin is anything up to £100. Assume the following structure and make your choice from the options above.

25/50
50/100
75/150
100/200
150/300
200/400-25
300/600-50
400/800-100
600/1200-100
800/1600-200
1000/2000-200
1500/3000-300
2000/4000-400
3000/6000-600
4000/8000-800
6000/12000-1000
etc

My choice was 5,000 / 25 mins. My preference is for the early levels of the tournament to matter and to build a frantic pace from the start.

Tournaments these days to me seem to think giving more chips is better and for me this is damaging tournaments and makes them less fun to play. e.g. Gala Leeds runs a £50 freezeout on 15,000/20min and it is awful in terms of enjoyability imo.

Whatever it is that is chosen it should start on time and have short breaks at reasonably regular intervals, including just before final table.

Much much much prefer 5000 or less start and 25/20 min clock for an evening 8pm game, hardly any exist now though cos punters want WFM and the ability to limp every hand for the first 4 levels.

I think you need to be a bit more specific with your boundaries - if you're assuming say 50-80 players, and you want to finish in around 6-7 hours, realistically, you have 3 choices - 5000/30, 10000/25, 15000/30. Personally I'd go for the middle option of those three.

50-80 players is a fair estimation for most places.

As for when to finish... that's a question in itself. I didn't specify that as your choice will reflect it. A 5000/20 is going to finish much earlier than a 15000/30. Personally i'd like most comps to be finished anywhere between 4-6 hours.

I'm going to go into the maths at a later time, but I want to get some opinions/votes before I do that.

15000/30 is going to last 9 or 10 hours.  Just look at the big blind.  80 runners, when the big blind gets to 16000 you will probably have 4 players with 20BBs or 8 with 10 BBs.  You are in to the 9th hour at that point and it is unlikely to have finished.  8pm starts and 5am finishes aren't going to get many repeat customers.

5k, 20 minutes is still going to be finishing at 1am assuming an 8pm start.

15k 20minutes

People can still get 15k over the line in the same way they will with 5k early doors and the extra chips help ave stack at the business end (I think, unless my thinking is flawed).

Keep the levels short though and hopefully get it done and dusted by 3.

Let's say weekday.

I'm sliiightly happier for a weekend tournament to last a little longer.

5k/20 mins for a weekday. No ridiculous late finish for the workers. Can punt off early and still play cash/gamble.

Also what D said re: start on time, breaks.

What about 15/20 min clock in the first few levels and then changing to 30mins later on to give more player later and to stop the game dragging on so much in the early levels

20 minute clock with dealers who can keep the game moving - otherwise it's less than an orbit/level.

5k or something between that and 10k. 7.5 - 8k seems to work out ok, but 5k should be enough for a game that will end at a reasonable time.

Start on time AND restart promptly after breaks. Why is this so difficult for Casino games to do?
