Why doesn't aq player like Robert Thornton switch back to the BDO?
He's vvv unlikely to ever win a major at the PDC even though he's an excellent player.
But he'd surely win everything at the BDO
He will make a lot more $$$ in the PDC ranked in top 10 that he would in the BDO as number 1. To match his earnings (in prize money) he would have be pretty much sweep the boards in the BDO. There is £100k for winning the Lakeside but peanuts for everything else. Thornton has earnt £228k in the PDC order of merit which is on a rolling two years. That doesn't include money won in the GSOD or Premier League both of which are very lucrative.
Darts database has hit total earnings for the past two years as £383k.
That is an eye watering amount of money for a guy who has never (unless my memory fails me) made a major final.
He made the GSOD final last year and won the UK Open in 2012. But yeah it's not a bad living for someone who will never be higher than the fringes of the top 10. That's before you add in the money from sponsorship and exhibitions.

I was about 12 when Jocky Wilson became world champion and he came to my Dad's works social club for an exhibition evening. My Dad volunteered to do a shift behind the bar, I was drafted in to keep the shelves stocked. Jocky was on halves of Barcardi and Coke, *very* light on the Coke. He'd had 7 or 8 by the time the darts actually started.
First leg he was left with 150. Checked out with three bulls.
Very impressive I'm sure.
But what about the other 90 minutes or whatever he was performing?
There just aren't enough crowd pleasing shots to fill an a whole exhibition IMO.

Agreed but they draw in big crowds even for seemingly average/lower profile players. Which is obviously more revenue for the pub e.t.c
How many other sports can you have a pint and probably play a leg or two against a professional? Not many

Thornton has made 3 PDC major finals winning 1 so maybe not the best example

Fair enough, but I was trying to pick a player who would totally dominate the BDO but was just outside the elite of the PDC.

No evidence of this
But if a player like Thornton went to the Bdo i presume his average/consistency would soon drop if he was not playing as regularly and certainly against lesser players?

Players just outside the top of the BPDC wouldn't dominate the BDO imo. You are talking like Thornton would be a 1/2 poke ante post for the BDO world's if he moved. He wouldn't be anywhere near odds on imo to win the BDO worlds.
In addition to moving the bdo worlds pays £100k for the winner to headline the prize pool but only £30k to runner up and £15k to semi finalists. You are taking a pretty big risk moving to BDO to win their one major prize every year if you are odds against to win it. There are only maybe 4 players who would dominate in the BDO and be odds on ante post for the bdo world's imo. Taylor, MVG, Ando and maybe Lewis (he isn't as consistent as the others and throws in plenty of shocking performances).
Wright, Chizz, Barney, Thorn , Whit and even wade etc would just be at the top of the pack of the bdo's best but not miles clear at all.

What price would you have made Thornton for the Lakeside this year?
I would have backed him at Evens I think.
The standard of the Durrant/Adams semi final was by far the highest I've seen since the split.
Yet I still think Thornton would be still be a good jolly to beat either playing at that level.

As previous poster said he would have had to have played in the BDO all season to qualify for the bdo worlds so he wouldn't be anywhere near as 'match sharp' as he would be if he just jumped over after a brutal PDC season at the very top level. If you factor this in then he would be a much bigger price for the BDO than you think. It's also debatable whether he would have to go to work part time/full time if he was a bdo player. He is also a convicted wife beater which can't help his off the field earnings.
I would have happily have laid you Thorntonat evens even if he had jumped straight in from a PDC season which, in theory, he would never be allowed to do. I would have made him a 6/4 - 2/1 fav if he had played.

would Adams ever have made it at PDC level, or never quite good enough?
might Mitchell be good enough?
Anderson, Van Barneveld, Bunting are the 3 successful crossovers or are there more?

Adams would have made it in the PDC in terms of being a consistent top 10-16 player. Think King/Painter/Whitlock rather than Barney and Anderson. People forget Adams is older than Taylor and still providing averages and standard of play like he did yesterday at nearly 60 years old.

Adams was clearly good enough to compete with the PDC but he has always been one of the most prominent voices against the concept of the PDC.
ArbBet, chalk up each of the following, if they were to go over to the BDO World Champs against the field, assuming good mental preparation:
1) Terry Jenkins
2) Wes Newton
3) Brendan Dolan
4) Paul Nicholson
5) Ian White
6) James Wade
7) Michael Smith
8
) Jelle Klaasen

Based on the fact they move over in line with the rules of the BDO (ie they can't just jump from the PDC having played full time effectively week in week out) they would have to not play in the PDC for the whole year prior to the bdo champs. I am pretty sure this would take a slight edge off their level of sharpness. My prices are based on said players moving tomorrow to the bdo (not playing in the PDC in 2015) and based on them winning the 2016 BDO world champs. I also assume that only they move in their individual price and not all the others from the PDC you mention as it would obviously affect their price massively.
1) Terry Jenkins 6/1
2) Wes Newton 10/1
3) Brendan Dolan 6/1
4) Paul Nicholson 25/1
5) Ian White 14/1
6) James Wade 2/1
7) Michael Smith 7/2
8
) Jelle Klaasen 12/1

One other factor on those prices is the pressure of the stage. Some guys are known to be far better on the floor and is the Lakeside anything like as intimidating as any of the PDC Majors? Someone like Ian White, who does well in side comps but whoI can barely remember winning as an underdog on TV might favour the environment.

I might be a little big on Wade at 2/1. I did those prices in 30 seconds combined. I really don't rate Wade though like so many do. All his TV majors are when Taylor got beat without wade beating him. His averages are always pants and he is well known to be fucked up in the head. Also Wade doesn't like playing darts so he would never move to the BDO because he only plays for money. He has often said he would rather be a mechanic, like he used to be, than play darts for a living.
White at 14/1 might be a touch big as well.
Dont forget Bunting was a 5/2 shot last year to win the BDO 12 months ago. This will give you some idea of the relative prices i have given.
