What's your thoughts on Schlek, my understanding is he is coming back from a ban?

Brilliant cyclist at his peak, but there is plenty of suspicion that his success was fuelled partly by drugs. Easy to say that his dog days are over, and he has no chance in this event. It would be like John Daly winning the golf this weekend.

But I do have another tip to put up. One that I promised earlier. Again, I have to warn everyone that this is not a TfT quality tip, but worth a punt at the price.

Matteo Trentin can sprint with the best of them. From the same team as Mark Cavendish ... Omega Pharma - Quick Step ... he is good enough to maybe score a podium finish on one or two of the stages. And he can keep up on the climbs. Also, for some reason, Mark Renshaw (Cavendish's lead-out man) is not with him him at the Tour de San Luis, but is taking part Down Under. Maybe as a lead-out man for Trentin? A bit of practice for the Giro? Who knows?

For 200/1 @ BetVictor and 150/@ PP, he is even better value than old JJ Rojas. Each-way of course. Still fancy Simon Gerrans to win the lot.

ooh, quality pick there cheapwet!  Renshaw must be going a) for practice and b) teaching/showing the team how to get the train right.
Only way you can get the train right with the jumps is to right up there in a race with the elbows clashing.

Good luck with your bets lads. Think I'll be sitting this one out, although stage 5 Willunga Hill is always exciting, may get involved then.

Anyone know what time & channel in UK this is on?

Wow what a fantastic finish, now can you explain what it means or how it affects the whole race?

While officially stage 1, it's just an appetizer for the main race proper starting tomorrow.

Kittel looked it supreme control in that sprint, no panic, & just enough gas to get the win. Looks to have plenty more in the tank.

Good to see cws's man JJ in the mix.

Rumours & some shrewed journos in Aus have tipped up Rory Sutherland big. Price slashed overnight from 200/1 to 20/1. Interesting, we'll see...

A ten minute look at this over coffee, so no recommends, but...

Serpa, has a great record here, getting on a bit, but Lampre send a strong team.

Intxausti @ 50/1, if Quintana is just building towards the Giro, Benat could be leading Movistar. CWS any info on your hero?

Sorry Tonji, I'm a bit late to the party regarding the Tour de San Luis. Just as well, as according to reports, most of the favourites for the GC suffered on the first stage thanks to a stomach bug going round the peloton ... as well as a windy parcours (not related to the stomach bug I am told). As you might know, this led to a breakaway succeeding in claiming the stage victory, and little-known Phillip Gaimon of Garmin-Sharp now leads the overall by 12s (4:35 ahead of Intxausti, Quintana, et al). Game on?!? Tongue I'm now eagerly awaiting the latest GC odds, but am probably going to avoid putting money on the overall result, and have a punt on the TT later in the week instead.

I've just finished watching the first stage of the Tour Down Under, where an in-form Simon Gerrans has taken the early lead. He now has between a and 15s advantage over most of the main contenders. For this thread's purposes (ie. riders that have been mentioned), the most pertinent results are: Ulissi (+11), Evans (+11), Sutherland (+15), Moreno (+15), Rojas (+15), Schleck (+15), Hermans (+15), Trentin (2:32).

Gerrans managed to pip Andre Greipel on the line, and in this sort of imperious form, he will be very hard to beat. Unfortunately, Rojas was looking good until he and Moreno decided to do a combined Movistar arse-over-tit just 1km from the end. Degree of difficulty: 5.4 This is bad for my suggested bet, as this was a stage I really fancied him to pick up a few bonus seconds on. Thank goodness for the UCI kindly awarding crashed cyclists the same time as the bunch inside of the last 3km. In the spirit of hoping for Sam Allardyce to lose his job, we must now also hope that Gerrans crashes on the Corkscrew tomorrow. Mean-spirited ... maybe ... but he is after all a tax-dodger who lives in Monaco.

Great write up CWS, please keep them coming, is it possible for you to put up the best link to follow for results?

Just found out that JJ Rojas was a DNS this morning in the Tour Down Under after fracturing his scaphoid in yesterday's fall. Sigh.

http://www.oddschecker.com/cycling/tour-down-under/tour-down-under-2014-stage-3/winner

Looks like this stage could decide the overall result. Gerrans & OGE probably think this is the only stage left that can harm their chances. Realistically only Ulissi & Evans look a real threat to GC. Sky will probably like their chances today, but need to ride full gas up Corkscrew to reduce to a select few.

Prices look about fair to me, nothing stands out.
