Poker and WSOP in the big scheme of things is tiny, no one cares outside poker players. You would think offering anyone who wants to report on it, chip counts or whatever could do so for free to push the brand in as many media sources as possible. Current insular thinking means no one bothers to look, care or read about it.

Yup.

We get a bit carried away with ourselves at times.

The WSOP squeeze Poker News for every penny they can, I daresay, but they can hardly do that AND impose standards. Who else will step into the breach if PokerNews quit?

The very much larger slice of WSOP income comes from ESPN, which is massive. Their intrusion on the playing experience is nothing short of disgraceful, but CE has bills to pay & shareholders to keep happy, so they are obliged to monetize it for all their worth.

Maybe not. I think a live update adds something to a comp and I'd happily pay an extra ten bucks on my entry fee for a big comp for there to be live updates. This would be 10 grand for 1000 runners. If a service is being run, it should either be run properly or not at all. This is a halfway house and deeply unsatisfactory IMO.

I've said enough on this anyway, so I'll stop now.

I would not pay extra rake for live updates!

I don't believe enough people would be turned off from entering a $1,500 event because $10 went towards providing accurate updates, exposure for those who play well but don't necessarily final, memories of the occasion and records for those who follow them from afar.

All depends on the product being offered. At the moment, it is implicitly being paid for by the punters anyway if the wsop is funding it.

I keep being drawn into a rant - no one else's fault but my own - so I'm going to stop properly now.

I can understand it being difficult to keep up when there are hundreds still in a tournament, but I don't see why they mis-identify players when there are four or five tables left. They remind me of AWOP - focus on the players they know and ignore the others.

but they buy the rights for marketing reasons and then do a terrible job

this is such a backward mentality, when there is technology is place capable of improving their offering.

I love the WSOP and I follow it everyday. So far this year I have been to poker news once (in 2 weeks?), to view their content, (when Bax won), and Im almost certain I could have just you tubed the interview the next day anyway. The manner in which they cover the WSOP does nothing but damage their brand (IMO ofc)

Guy,

Apologies if I've missed it elsewhere but what in your opinion should they do to make the coverage better? What technology is there that can improve their offering? Genuinely asking for constructive criticism and I'll pass it along to someone I know working out there for them or point them in the direction of this thread.

I can tell you what I used to like about the site, that is now missing and what I would like to see  - this ofc will just by my opinion and tastes (ill do it later on)

As for alternatives, I believe there was a company 2/3 years ago offering a chip update system but its not something I know anything about.

The point I was making is that they stifle any innovation by taking sole rights then doing absolutely nothing to improve (and infact this year go backwards IMO).

Event #21: $3000 No-Limit Hold'em / Six Handed

129 of 807 remain with 90 paid

Day one of Event #21: $3,000 No-Limit Hold'Em (Six-Handed) is in the books. The unofficial chip leader after 10 levels of play is Jesse Wilkie with 187,700 in chips. He leads the 129 players who remain from the starting field of 807.

Following Wilkie are Victor Ramdin (184,000), Ryan Olisar (154,500), Danny Doucet (140,000), Scott Seiver (132,000), and Maurice Hawkins (100,500). Phil Ivey and Phil Hellmuth both survived late into the day, but both were knocked out and will have to wait until another day to add to their bracelet count.

Only 90 players will be paid, so 39 who return for day two will walk away empty-handed, but all players still in the tournament surely have their eyes firmly fixed on winning the $506,764 first prize

For the UK the following are still in

Sam Grafton
Rhys Jones
Steve Watts
JP Kelly
Sam Trickett

Event #22: Pot-Limit Omaha
Buy-in: $1,500
Prizepool: $1,378,350
Entries: 1,022
Remaining: 117

Chris Brammer and Richard Ashby are shown in the top 20 of those remaining, Ross Boatman shown still in too

After a full ten hours of Pot-Limit Omaha action here in Event #22, a field of 1,021 runners was decimated by the wrap draws, re-sucks, and random variance so common in this wildly popular poker variant. In the end, a rare feat for three-day WSOP events was achieved, as we reached the money on the first day of play with only 117 players surviving the onslaught.

Brandon Crawford is our chip leader, after amassing a stack of 125,400

Joseph Cheong of 2010 "November Nine" fame also built a sizable stack by the end of Day 1, gaining momentum when he bricked on a flush draw but found a runner-runner straight to more than double up. With 52,400 chips entering play tomorrow, Cheong is in position to make yet another deep run here in a WSOP event.

The story of the day, however, was not about players earning chips. Instead, the saga of Ben Tollerene's missing chip stack captured the attention of players, reporters, and tournament officials alike, as the online super-stakes sicko returned from the dinner break to find his table broken, and his stack absconded with. Despite a brief delay while the issue was sorted out, Tollerene managed to make the money here tonight, but with only 5,300 chips entering Day 2 he will need to make things happen in a hurry.
