new laptop
«

I do 90% of my surfing on my 'phone and have an ageing desktop for word processing etc. My laptop is about ten years old now and isn't in the best of health. A replacement is in order so that this one can get a well earned retirement in Silicon Heaven (one for the Red Dwarf fans)
I'm looking for a laptop that will be serviceable for a bit of casual poker, here and there, general browsing and of course some chess. Larger screen is useful, but any views or recommends?

Lenovo have a really good range, generally good value with decent screens. I got mine for £300 last year and it plays games, poker, browses fine. Other brands with same spec were generally £500-600.

to be honest anything you buy new will do those jobs fine for you. Pick a budget and go shopping! If you want a big screen then go for a 17inch (though you will get less choice and heavier if you plan to lug it around).
ebuyer.com is a decent website

+1. Bought my son a Lenovo just before Christmas, was a good spec for the price and been impressed with it so far.
Dell is my other default choice.

Another +1 for Lenovo. Had mine for a year or so and very impressed with it, especially in comparison to the Acer that I had previously.

Thanks for the suggestions, chaps. Have left the thread unattended for a couple of days to allow comments and you've been very helpful.

Tal, Dave, I used to be able get high spec Dell machines for a decent price but unfortunately my Dell connection is no longer with the company. I can't even get one for myself now.
Sorry
