Russell Peters. Very underrated comedian over here but huge in Canada/US etc.

Jimmy Carr is very good live.

Echoing the above for Connolly/Rock/Chappelle.

Martin Lawrence and Eddie Murphy were also very good but their shows wouldnt pass the PC censors nowadays!

Jimmy Carr, in my opinion, works hardest at his craft, and just nails a joke more often than almost anyone else.
Saw him in the few days after his tax issues went public, and he handled that situation much better than I thought possible.

Milton Jones and Stewart Francis always seem to make laugh.

Three good choices there Tighty. Milton is very marmite, I personally love him.

I've seen some comedians more than once and non live up to their first performance. Rhod Gilbert, Sarah Millcan are examples.

Seen Jimmy Carr/Kevin Bridges/Mikey Flanagan/Frankie Boyle/Peter Kay. Liked them all.

Favourite performances have come from Stephen K Amos, Jason Byrne, Tom Stade and the first Rhod Gilbert one.

Going to see Andrew Lawrence in January, really looking forward to it.

Love Russell Howard's good news on TV.

Hard to beat Richard Pryor in his hay day.
Saw Jason Byrne at Edinburgh fest this year.Very funny with great audience interaction. Im surprised he isn't a tv regular.

Lots of good stand up out there without paying over the odds to watch someone whose made multiple appearances on Mock the 8 out of 10 News for You and is now attempting to fill an arena somewhere.
Comedy is best in small venues and there are lots of people out on tour heading for all corners of the country.
Look out for James Acaster, light whimsical stiff but very well crafted.
Tom Wrigglesworth, with stories of his granddad and  a very poignant ending
Festival of the Spoken Nerd is mostly for science and maths geeks but is a good night out.
Stewart Lee, anywhere.
Jason Cook, solidly funny observational stuff.
Noel Fielding is on tour if you have a taste for the surreal.
Simon Evans was excellent at EdFringe a couple of years ago
And finally, check the tour dates for Miles Jupp. His last tour 'Fibber in the Heat' was his story of going to India as the cricket correspondent of the Western Mail. Utterly brilliant stuff.

Otherwise, just take a risk on the line up at your local arts centre.
I saw Andrew Lawrence, Tom Stade, Rehinald D Hunter, Sarah Millican , Ed Byrne, Al Murray, Tim Minchin and a bundle of others about 10 years ago in local small venues.
Frankly they were all funnier and more connected with the audience then.

PS. People who bought Milton Jones may also enjoy Stewart Francis.

James Acaster is very funny.  I find Andrew Lawrence very funny but his sister is one of my best friends and know the family well and he does a lot of stuff on them so I might be slightly biased although I get the feeling after some of his comments this week he might not be getting as many gigs in future.

Kevin Bridges is hilarious, perhaps made funnier by the thick Scottish accent

Wasn't a big Jimmy CArr fan until recently when I went to see him live and it was incred, by far the best comedy show I've seen

Sure pleased to read this...

I had tickets for Jimmy Carr when he was in Bournemouth, last time he was on tour, and missed it through illness.

Guess I'll have to make sure I make it next time he's down this way!

Louis
Chris Rock
Doug Stanhope

Americans, I'm sad to say, are much better at stand up right now.

Not a fan in general, but Jimmy Carr is masterful live. Best heckler dealer of the lot
