World Champion Magnus Carlsen concedes defeat against Norway's number two player, John Ludwig Hammer in the final round of a major chess tournament in Norway.

This was as shocking a performance in a tournament as any in any sporting situation. There were times when it looked like he simply forgot how to play. The end of the Hammer game was a checkmate trick a novice could find.

Carlsen isn't erratic in his play; he is calm, doesn't take risks and plays on his natural genius, supported by extensive training and preparation.

As chessbase put it:.

An absolute disaster for the World Champion. Here he is realizing that he is about to get mated by Hammer's rooks. He lost 23 rating points in this tournament, lost four games, and this is easily the worst tournament ever played by Carlsen after obtaining his [Grandmaster title]

Carlsen lost his first round on time because he didn't realise what the time controls were. That's up there with a football team not realising the away goals rule applies in a tournament. His opponent, Topalov, now full of confidence, went on to win the comp.
