this is in the news again with the appointment of a supposedly anti BBC Culture secretary

with multiple platforms these days, hundreds of channels around, is BBC funded by licence fee still appropriate?

should it accept advertising?

do you begrudge paying the TV licence fee?

Doesn't bother me really, doesn't cost too much and they do decent stuff from time to time and I listen to the radio everyday in the car.

I don't mind paying it.  They make some excellent programs and it's nice not having adverts in them.   If you analysed my channel watching habits during the week I think BBC1 and BBC2 would be top of the list.

I do think it's a cheek that it's a legal requirement though.

The TV licence fee is the single best value for money thing in the world. £150 a year - Sky Sports is what, £400-£500 a year?

Something I've not seen mentioned (and someone correct my thinking if it's wrong) but wouldn't the scrapping of the licence fee, and the BBC taking advertising, be disastrous for ITV.

Imagine if every ITV advertiser said 'we have to split our advertising budget now so we're cutting our spend with you by half'

Bargain imo.

My day starts opening BBC online for news. Radio 6 music & radio 4 throughout the day. Catch up with TV in the evening on the iplayer. So much quality content, Auntie Beeb is just great.

If sky forced everyone to subscribe by law then their monthly fee would be a lot lower as well.   You can't compare the two.  If BBC was subscription then I would pay for it as I like their output but I resent the fact I am forced to subscribe under threat of imprisonment.

Nobody's forced to buy it. If you don't record or watch any programs as they're broadcast you don't need a licence. Unfortunately it includes the non-BBC channels as well.

If you only watch catch-up services or things like Netflix then you can just cancel your licence.

You don't need a licence to listen to the radio.

Everything mentioned above is a bargain because you don't need to pay for it.

Just makes the licence fee a bit more of a rip off for you.

Fortunately because you don't know about it you happily carry on paying without batting an eyelid as you think you're getting good value for money.

Just because it doesn't fit in your view of the world doesn't mean it's biased.

I imagine just as many Tories and non Tories will claim its biased.

Look at a broadcast like Putin's mouthpiece Russia Today and then claim that the BBC is some heavily  government influenced organisation.

In case anybody wondered yes I do begrudge it but only because they don't make it clear whether or not you need it.

It's not a problem for me because I can afford the £12 a month or whatever it is but it's basically another "stealth tax" on less well off people as far as I'm concerned.

Completely disgusting!!

Why would I ciompare it against Russian State Media?  That is just stupid.

I don't want it to subscribe to my views I want t to be impartial.  There are many times I could site BBC bias.

Cameron has one chance to abolish the licence fee and this is it, says Charles Moore http://specc.ie/1HgH4op
