Lords vote to give Parliament a full veto to stop a hard Brexit, by 366 v 268.

At 634 Lords voting - this a50 amendment passed was largest House of Lords vote since 1831 reform act, beating 1999 Maastricht

cliffs So the Lords have voted to give MPs the right to a meaningful vote on the Brexit deal but MPs voted against getting a meaningful vote

majority of self-employed will be made better off despite NICs rate increase, due to scrapping of regressive Class 2.

Most stunning Budget fact is that Brexit wasn't mentioned in Hammond's speech

Govt confirms 1.6m self employed will pay more tax - average £240/yr - from April 2018. 2015 manifesto said no NI increases (though govt claims this meant class 1 not class 4 and legislation post election on NICs went through)

Ex Miliband/ Darling aide and resfoundation chief says Chancellor has done right thing on National Insurance..

The cost of lower National Insurance for the self-employed was set to reach £6bn by 2020 if nothing was done - which couldn't be justified"

the politics of the NIC rise is difficult (more difficult than the economics of it)
