It was ALL about race and gender, and hatred of the big evil city. Second round of the Civil War really; many confederacy flags will wave

the power of the common man (well the billionaire who isn't a politican anyway)

the NYT piece this morning

"Donald Trump defied the skeptics who said he would never run and the political veterans who scoffed at his campaign"

One of the morals of the story here as with Brexit is if people get talked down to for being stupid, thick etc for potentially voting a particular way they aren't going to react too kindly to it, and are probably more likely to vote that way. So whilst those people doing the name calling might feel superior for saying that, they are doing their cause no good and are less likely to get the outcome they want.

Boris on Twitter

'Congratulations to Donald Trump and much looking forward to working with his administration on global stability and prosperity'

Good luck with that Boris

PS Contrary to what I was expecting the USD has actually strengthened v GBP overnight.

12 hour high and high from xe.com are about 1.25 (when Trump looked like he was going to win) - and 1.23 from before it started; so not sure what you've seen (?)

The interesting thing is the shape of the graph. As it seemed more and more likely that Trump would win the pound kept on climbing - but then when it became clear that he definitely had won, it started falling again.

Not quite sure what to make of that - maybe because he seemed quite reasonable when he finally won rather than what he's normally like?

one interpretation

"Trump had "Make America Great Again", Leave had "Take Back Control". Clinton and Remain outgunned on messaging."

how about this for a first paragraph at 2.40am ET in the New Yorker

"the election of Donald Trump to the Presidency is nothing less than a tragedy for the American republic, a tragedy for the Constitution, and a triumph for the forces, at home and abroad, of nativism, authoritarianism, misogyny, and racism. Trump’s shocking victory, his ascension to the Presidency, is a sickening event in the history of the United States and liberal democracy. On January 20, 2017, we will bid farewell to the first African-American President—a man of integrity, dignity, and generous spirit—and witness the inauguration of a con who did little to spurn endorsement by forces of xenophobia and white supremacy. It is impossible to react to this moment with anything less than revulsion and profound anxiety."

bloody heck

With 97% reporting, about 112 million Americans voted.

Lowest turnout since 2000, when 107 mil voted. And 18 mil fewer votes cast than '12.

200m didn't vote! (i am told)

GBP was 1.241 when I looked yesterday around teatime, and it is now 1.2441 according to my eyes..

Minimal I know but I was expecting 1.40(ish).

Once again I went to bed secure in the knowledge that it just couldn't happen.

When will I ever learn?

Please stop going to bed before it's over - now look what you've done.
