The Veep has been required to step up many times, but they were never replaced and their old job always stayed vacant til the next election, which was almost four years a couple of times. Same thing if they lost a VP for some other reason - the job just stayed empty. They changed this in the late Sixties after Kennedy/Johnson and the new rule kicked in twice almost immediately, with Ford takng over from Spiro Agnew as VP and then, less than a year later, appointing Nelson Rockefeller to the job when he replaced Nixon as President, the only person to become Prez without having been elected to either job.

Trump will survive for as long as the Republicans support him. Many of them are repulsed by his actions, but he is their route to getting what they want - healthcare and tax reform. So far, there is no sign of them withdrawing their support. Despite everything, the likely scenario is still that Trump will be safe until the mid-terms at the end of 2018, unless Republican Congressmen find that supporting him is losing them public support. If they start thinking their seats are in danger, his support will evaporate.

For now, a lot of them aren't sure which way to jump, so are keeping quiet. See, for example, the responses to the Comey sacking. Someone made a spreadsheet of every Congressman's tweets about it. The Democrats are uniformly anti but the most striking thing is the silence from almost all Republicans. The few brave ones who shared their difficulty with it left themselves enough room to come back in line if necessary.
