So, 71% of the results have been released and Buttigieg is being reported as the winner so far. Sanders has the most votes on first counts. Sanders has the most votes on realigned second counts. Due to good ole Iowan democracy, Buttigieg has received the most State delegates and is generally being reported as ‘winning’. And they are deemed to have the same pledged delegates. Calling Buttigieg the winner is an interesting way of interpreting the outcome.

First release of results (62%):

First Vote:
Sanders 27,194 (24.4%)
Buttigieg 23,763 (21.4%)

Second Vote:
Sanders 28,319 (26.2%)
Buttigieg 27,135 (25.1%)

State Delegate Equivalents:
Sanders 338 (25.1%)
Buttigieg 363 (26.9%)

Warren 246 (18.3%)
Biden 210 (15.6%)
Klobuchar 170 (12.6%)

Pledged Delegates:
Sanders 10
Buttigieg 10
Warren 4
Biden 0
Klobuchar 0

Can I ask you for your opinion. There's a lot of polling on the subject of who would do best against Trump and of course there's a long way to go. Who do you think would have the best chance against Trump and do you think the US is ready to elect

a) A woman
b) A socialist
c) An openly gay man

Everything I see from the US would make me think anyone from these sets would struggle, even against Trump. Are they ready to be more European in outlook where you would comfortably find all these sets being represented in national leadership

True that but assumed they must've just piled high in the more progressive states. Still yes, reckon it proves they're ready for a woman to be pres.

Not a very popular one by all accounts, either.

Shows how crazy the system is, lol.

Trumps diatribe yesterday was fantastic to watch but also very disturbing.

His vitriol knows no bounds , he just does not have a moral compass.

The fawning of all his lackies around him made me want to puke , sanctimonious
arseholes.

Contrast that to Adam Schiff's closing argument in the Impeachment trial.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OMS2dOX9fzA

Class and classless springs to mind.

I don't loath/hate/despise many people in this world but the Donald has overtook
the mother in law as enemy number one.

I fear he will get re elected in November and the consequences for the World especially
in tackling climate change will be hugely detrimental.

Stunned by how he gets away with it all. Surely he is going to use all his get out of jail free
cards by the time his presidency comes to an end.

Yeah, Schiff was great. Even some Republican Senators admitted it.

One of the best sideshows of the trial was the struggle for power between Schiff and Jerry Nadler. Nadler is Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee and Schiff is Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee. The Judiciary Committee led the Nixon and Clinton investigations, and should have been the natural home for this one. However, Pelosi has been unhappy with New Yorker Nadler for some time, particularly over his aggressive position on impeachment, while she has had a long-standing friendship and working partnership with fellow-Californian Schiff. Both Committees held impeachment hearings, but Schiff's hearings were given a much higher profile and Pelosi controversially awarded the position of lead manager at the trial to Adam. Nadler wasn't about to take this lying down, particularly as he is something of a Constitutional Law expert, and muscled his way into the limelight whenever possible, while being resisted by Schiff. As it happened, Nadler had to miss some of the trial due to his wife's cancer battle, as they had 'key decisions to make', but he was there for most of it and made his presence felt. A lot probably happened behind the scenes, but their wrestling match spilled out into the public arena a couple of times, firstly when Schiff refused to let Nadler answer questions and then in a Laurel and Hardy moment when they raced to answer the last question of the day and Schiff's plaintive under-his-breath calls of "Jerry, Jerry, Jerry" were picked up loud and clear.

Kamala Harris got in trouble with Democrat Senate Leader Chuck Schumer for messing around in a press conference during the trial.

In the end, Mitt Romney was the only Senator to break ranks on either side, and didn’t tell anyone until he did it, apart from doing several newspaper interviews and a recorded TV interview, all embargoed til he voted. He has put his niece, Ronna Romney McDaniel, in a difficult position. As Chair of the Republican National Committee, she is now under pressure to condemn her uncle’s actions, possibly facing removal if she doesn’t.

Democrat Senators Doug Jones, Kyrsten Sinema and Joe Manchin wobbled but stayed in the Democrat fold. On the other side, Lamar Alexander and perennial GOP anti-Trumpers Lisa Murkowski and Susan Collins managed to find a way of rationalising that he had done it but he shouldn’t be sacked, so they’d vote to support him. As Collins told the Senate "This decision is not about whether you like or dislike this President or agree with or oppose his policies or approve or disapprove of his conduct in other circumstances. Rather it is about whether the charges meet the very high constitutional standard of treason, bribery or other high crimes or misdemeanours." Fine, Susan, we’re not sure whether you genuinely believe that but we’ll go along with you. She should have left it at that but then she went on CBS and made the daftest statement of the week. “I believe that the President has learned from this case...I believe that he will be much more cautious in the future.” She must be the only person in the US who thinks that.

Fellow Republicans Romney and Alexander ended up going in opposite directions.

Trump v Pelosi

Some people have said that Donald didn't see Nancy's hand offered for handshake. Seems unlikely.

Meanwhile, it seems that Nancy's tearing up the speech wasn't so spontaneous after all.

Can anyone explain why Trump is 4/6 for re-election. Are all the Dem candidates terrible again? Has America actually become greater again behind the headlines?
