RIP Suit & Tie?

I had an office job for maybe 38 of my 40 years in a proper job.

Even though I was often on mucky building sites & dirty portakabins, I wore a suit, white shirt & tie, & black shiny shoes every single day - no exceptions.

I suddenly became aware of late that most don't these days.

There is a Distribution List Next Door, every time there is a new starter, a little potted Bio & photo is circulated. Never seen a suit & tie in the photo yet.

Even the suits don't wear suits. The CEO of SB&G is a chap named Richard Flint, very smart guy (intellectually) with good solid traditional values, but he wears jeans & a jumper most days, even when doing Video presentations which we get regularly.

I occasionally see Jeremy Darroch, who is the CEO of Sky, one of the biggest comms companies in Europe, he must earn zillions. (Sky employ 30,000 staff). He is generally in "smart casual". 

Even Michael O'Leary is rarely seen in a suit & tie.

Do you wear a suit & tie to work?

Away from work, how often do you don a suit & tie?

I mean, if nobody wears a suit & tie to the office, which appals me, what the hell do they wear on "dress down Fridays"?

It's probably our industry Tikay. I work with the same guys as you, and it became obvious to us here wary on that if we turned up to meetings with partners in a suit we'd be over dressed.

Still put a shirt on if I'm meeting someone from the gambling commission, and I still drag the suit out for the trade show, but every day is dress down in the office

Would actually quite like to wear a suit, but I'd be the only one.

Where I work now was a suit and tie environment for the first 7 years I worked here.
I have one team never who never complied - introduced dress down Friday and he bloody wore a shirt and tie every Friday.
Within a year of the introduction of dress down Friday, standard dress has regressed to Collar and shoes.
I don't like it.  Not sure the suit sellers of Norwich do either.

Keep meaning to wear actual proper shirts but I never manage it because ironing.

Pre 2001 i was working for a big 5 Chartered Accountancy firm.  Obvious full works of Thomas Pink Shirt, Tie, Pin Stripe suit, shiny brogues and braces (optional but usually done on a Friday for lolz) every day without fail whether client facing or not.  Left for betting industry in 2001 and never wore a suit or even shirt and tie once in 6 years at various roles for various firms all the way up to head of trading.  Standard work uniform now is hoodie and tracksuit.  Even mum has caught on and doesn't buy me work shirts for xmas anymore but a tracksuit!

I sometimes miss 'dressing up' for work like the old days even though it cost a fortune every year to kit yourself out.

It is actually written into my job contract that I wear a shirt and tie and a suit jacket outside of the classroom . I don't begrudge it although its not always practical.

What I do begrudge is my female colleagues not being held to the same standards. They often look far less professional, particularly in Summer where they are often wearing vests and skirts yet us fellas are still wearing our suits and ties. I've seen women wearing jeans, boots, leggings etc.

Surely one rule for all.

When I lived with my old house mate, as we are both poker players, we had dress up Fridays. Full suits, tuxedos sometimes etc. But for tradition I can't imagine why anyone would want to wear a suit if they didn't have to. Prob best off productivity wise to be as comfy as possible?

If you're not comfortable in a suit - you're wearing the wrong suit.
