That is dreadful news, I was unaware that David had been ill.

Oh my, what a shock that is.

So many memories, so much music, & so original in so many ways.

RIP David.

RIP.

Never a great fan, but as I have grown older I have understood better, what a genius he was, with music that transcends generations.

V sad.

To say he was legendary is to understate him.

Having missed the impact of Ziggy and the sexual awakening of 70's Bowie, it will be Tin Machine era that had that Bowie wow factor for me.

Live Aid was my first real introduction to Bowie and I followed him after the event, for a time he was once again the biggest star on the planet, him and Jagger strutting their stuff all over the place.  Then Tin Machine arrived, the impact that this man could change direction, and have little regard for what it did to his public person was a wow moment for me and in some small way must have been similar for those that heard Ziggy at the time.

He was a true pioneer and his influence will be felt through popular music forever.

Big shout to Radio 5 and Nicky Campbell this morning - Campbell is a huge Bowie fan and has fronted the breakfast show quite wonderfully this morning.

All the Young Dudes, written by Bowie for Mott the Hoople, still stands scrutiny today - no less than 43 years on from it's release back in 1972.

As a sign of the times, it originally contained the lyric......

"Wendy's stealing clothes from Marks and Sparks"

Rigidly enforced regulations back in the day did not allow such things to be broadcast, so it was changed to....

"Wendy's stealing clothes from unlocked cars"

A terrific song, but if we were to list all of Bowie's great songs, we'd be here all day.

Always feel sad when a great artist passes, but this one has really shocked me. Turned the radio on this morning and they were playing one of his songs and immediately thought you can't be serious, hoped maybe it was a late tribute to his birthday, but no sadly not.

I was lucky enough to see him live many years ago and it ranks as one of my all time favourite gigs.

Very sad day.

Really shocked and saddened to hear the news.
Such a large part of my youth.

Two Bowie tracks i absolutely adore and which hold special memories for me - the aforementioned All the young dudes , and this fantastic track from Aladdin Sane

Ziggy died in the early 70s, such an inapproproate title.

I don't know how you pick one track, probably this one.

Maybe Life on Mars, Lady Grinning Soul is a good pick, Station to Station, Sweet Thing, Cat people, so so many

I tend to change favourite Bowie albums a lot, play one too much then move on.  Maybe Diamond Dogs right now.

Some of his stuff still feels fresh, I sometimes pit it on for the kids and thay are wow, what is this?

RIP Legend and Genius.

I count myself lucky that my mum introduced me to  Bowie through her love of Ziggy, Hunky Dory, Aladdin sane. Too many great songs but always loved Quicksand and favourite album as a whole piece is probably Low.

Spent most of my young years 12-14 with a massive androgynous poster of Bowie on my bedroom wall..might be the only time I seriously contemplated my sexuality. Haven't listened to much since the early 80s but feel like I'll miss him.
