Martin O'Neil can have any job he wants
ManU, England or Real Madrid or anyone else in europe.
I would guess he would take England as it is part time and could look after his wife and then take a proper job in 3-4 years (maybe Arsenal or Chelsea (ManU having been filled))

Newcastle season ticket holder since the late 70s. My own personal view (no inside info just calling it as i see it)
Hitzfield - Many fans number 1 choice in that he has an impressive cv and is alledgedly interested Big Sam - Already walked out of an interview once last year and Not a favourite of the fans because of style of football Stuart Pearce - Would be a popular choice but settled in Manchester and may have been privately warned off NUFC by Keegan M.O'Neil - Not ready to come back and happy to wait for Man Utd . Also a well publicised Sunderland fan who has went on record at talk ins that he would never manage Newcastle. Curbs - ok in current role but doubtful whether he could step up and face our almost impossible demands of success. O'Leary - Please god no !!!!!! Paul Jewel - Highly thought of but question mark over whether he could handle some of the overpaid brats at Newcastle Sven - Not a hope in hell Mike Newell - Been talk of a joint post with Shearer but it aint going to happen.
Shearer has played 10 years and is the all time leading scorer , he is savvy to know that hes a playing legend however when he hangs up his boots there is a forward line up of ....
Owen who will....
a) score 30 goals a season 50/1 b) stick around for at least 1 more season and maybe play 15-20 games 6/4 c) have a half decent world cup and be away in the summer 1/2
That realistically leaves a forward line up of Amoebi (crap) , Chopra (div 1 class at best) , new signing (realistically someone who is not getting his place in another prem team) That combination means just like Wednesday a struggle to score goals . That with an iffy defence means Newcastle more likely to be in the bottom half . Shearer was negotiating a broadcasting contract when he said he was playing and those negotiations were put on hold. He wont jump in at the deep end and take over a struggling Newcastle side . If he is to be the Newcastle manager it is more likely to be in 3 or 4 years time. Let someone else start from scratch and take the flak. I would be amazed if he hasnt had that conversation with Newell and put him off.
Glenn Roeder currently acting coach is well thought of at NUFC and was offered the job but his past bad experience and illness at West Ham has put him off. If Newcastle were to somehow qualify for Europe or win the FA Cup then he would take it full time but like Shearer isnt keen on diving in at the deep end with failure more expected than success.
The next manager ideally will currently not be employed already thus saving yet another expensive settlement. Hitzfeld with his impressive cv , availability and willingness is amongst the favourites and my pick and a lot of the fans. He is experienced and wise enough to be able to start from scratch whilst still playing attractive football. Freddie wants him as he is the best and most viable candidate. The negotiation are alledgedly ongoing and the board are just waiting till the end of season so they can plan their strategy and decide what funds would be available to the new boss.
I expect about £10-15 million to be available with any extra coming from the sale Bowyer , Luque and unfortunately but probable..Shay Given.

Why would Newcastle want to sell Given? Luque has been very very disappointing. As for Bowyer, he should have been sold after he started a fight with Dyer.

We don't want to sell Given, but for several seasons of underachievment now he has made noises about not wanting to go his whole career without winning things - i.e "get yer act together NUFC or I'm off to Man u or the Arse the first chance I get." Incidentally, there are now reports around town from highly respected sources that O'Neill is a done deal and will be joining at the end of the season.

Just like Stephen Carr. Grass and greener comes to mind.

Thing is though Man Utd have now got Van Der Sar and would he realistically win more at Arsenal. Amazing the other season and a great result vs Real Madrid but this is still a big transition period for Arsenal. They have bankrolled the stadium and have struggled on the pitch as a result. No player would be keen to commit to the Gunners if Henry went and if he does they would struggle to fill Highbury next season never mind Ashburton Grove.
That is maybe the same dilemna for Owen. Chelsea dont seem interested , Man Utd have enough quality in the positions and Arsenal would be a risk if they are about to become Londons 3rd (or even worse) team. Chelsea have turned the football world upside down and no longer are teams prepared to match them financially when realistically they are fighting for 2nd place. Bearing in mind the only downside to 4th is an extra qualifying game for the CL.
Have heard various rumours about M O'N today but nothing concrete and im still willing to go out on a limb that a) he sticks to his mackem based promise of never managing Newcastle b) he holds on for Man Utd

I wish I had your optimism for Arsenal's decline Next season, Arsenal will have the highest gate receipts in world football. They will be playing in the best stadium in the Premier League . I think that Given/Owen would jump at the chance to play at Arsenal, but would Arsenal want either of them?

If Henry goes and their is no CL do you realistically think Arsenal would fill a new stadium. Remember when they played their European games at Wembley. Didnt sell out there. GR doing ok for Toon so far . 4 wins and a draw with only 1 goal conceded. Not the hardest batch of games in the world , but you can only beat what is put in front of you.

They didn't sell out, but they did get 72,000 fans instead of 77,000.
