I am going to form a play list from scratch

Each poster that replies, give me two songs (any genre,any era, any artist) that should be on it and why.

When we hit 40 songs/20 respondents I will collate.

I will then submit my daughter to it on a long journey this weekend.

She'll thank you, and i will be able to explain why these songs....

Good idea, I should do the same for my daughter. I do try and make her aware of the great bands from the past.

The Wonder Stuff - Mission Drive. Used to get played whenever we set off to gigs. It's a great song to start a journey with and one that makes me happy every time I hear the opening guitar riff.

Led Zeppelin - Stairway to Heaven. One of the greatest rock songs ever and everyone should be aware of it. I'm hoping someone else posts a GnR song!

Shorty Got Her Eyes on Me - Donell Jones

I don't have any special reason except these are my 2 favourite songs of all time. They aren't well known songs or by overly well known artists. Donell Jones's best known hit is "U Know What's Up" that he did with Left Eye from TLC. Marques Houston used to play Rodger in the Nickelodeon series Sister Sister which I used to watch when I was young.

A Northern Soul classic , one of the 3 before 8 .(The final 3 songs at Wigan Casinos allnighters.

David Bowie - Lady Grinning Soul.

Terrific track about loving a woman that you know is just going to use you but you can't stop loving her.

Madness: Baggy trousers not there best song but easily the most played one nowadays and no school disco was ever complete without it

Blur: Parklife from the britpop era one of the best out of manachester

Mainly because I saw Brian Harvey on When Celebrity Goes Horribly Wrong on telly last night and they told his sad story culminating in this clip (watch till the end, bless him!

Chumbawamba - The Day The Nazi Died (best version to use is the live version from the 'Showbusiness' album). A song from the 90s aimed towards the intolerance of far right groups. Still as relevant (if not more so) now.

The Wedding Present - Don't Laugh. This is a 'proper' love song. Not some formulaic crap written by numbers, but a song about dealing with a break-up (and there's no-one better at break-up music than the Weddoes). Recommended as it's inevitable fact of life that a Wedding Present break-up song will become relevant to everyone!

Geneva - No One Speaks

Almost completely forgotten Scottish band from the tail end of Britpop. Video for this was shot in the old Hoover Building on the A40 in London right beside my house - plenty of faded Art Deco stylings in the background.

Brian Eno - On Some Faraway Beach

I became aware of Brian Eno's solo stuff through watching Adam Curtis documentaries - this is from the first album he did after leaving Roxy Music.
