Bright on Netflix is fun.
The opening 15 mins has some of the most on the nose dialogue I have ever heard. Really terrible.
Once it gets going it is just mad, Will Smith running around dropping f bombs and fighting elves. I mean really, it's hard not to enjoy. It looks super expensive too, some really good action scenes.
The concept is better than the actual film, it is rubbish really but would watch a sequel.
sequel on the way..apparently cost 90 million to make and is the most watched thing ever on netflix !

There has been a lot of noise about how much it cost to make. I think it was probably at the back of my mind somewhere as I did watch it and just keep thinking bloody hell you can see this is expensive. It oozes money from the action scenes to the general aesthetic. The more I think about it the more I enjoyed it but wouldn't tell anyone.
Would like to see it as buddy cop tv show with the two stars solving crimes week to week in that world.

Really strange in a way - the film is good not brilliant imo. Interesting, well paced and shows the pressure of the time on both WC and family very well. Sure there are some messages in their for todays leaders as well but . . . .
Oldman is simply mesmerising, can't ever remember coming out of a film and it being so overshadowed by one performance (the wife is very good also, just not Oldman good) - its difficult to explain but there are moments when if you were told it was archive footage I am not sure you would be surprised (digital clarity aside). Not sure how you get nominated for Oscars and the like but if he doesn't I will be very surprised. Its like watching Robert Shaw do the Indianapolis speech in Jaws, Pacino inches speech in AGS or watching Hopper and Walkin do the Italian piece in True Romance except it lasts for 2 hours, it is perfect in that regard.
Would recommend but Billboards is the best film I saw this weekend.

Anyone seen Molly's Game yet?
Supposedly the best poker movie since Rounders.

Guess it could make that claim, but the opposition hasn't exactly been strong. It's a 5 out of 10 at best for me. Some of the poker scenes were about as realistic as in Casino Royale.
Three Billboards though, absolute perfection. 10/10 all day every day.
Sam Rockwell must be nailed on for Best Supporting Actor.

Thought the three billboards film was dogshit & boring. No surprise it scooped at the sag awards. All female presenters & global female power rhetoric is pretty odd and possibly offensive/sexy.

Did a triple header today.
The Post
I've never got Meryl Streep tbh, she's a good actress but I've never really been blown away by a performance. Hanks is Hank's, solid in this too. A good true story about the shambles that was Vietnam and the US involvement there even before the war. The utter mess the US government got themselves in by fabricating their facts and the cover ups to suppress the stories. Revolves around The Post publishing exerts from the Pentagon Papers and if they could all be jailed by doing so.
Good film if you like slow moving historical episodes. 7/10
Three Billboards
I'm a big fan of McDonaghs films and this is really good. It's a film about murder, hatred, revenge, cancer, suicide, anger, rape, domestic abuse, racism and grief with F and C bombs abound but has some real comedy moments in it too. V dark at times and subtely funny in others, often in the same scene. Frances Mcdormand is terrific as the grief driven mum and it has so many layers to it, the characters too.
Easily an 8 to 8 1/2.
Darkest Hour
As advertised a brilliant performance by Gary Oldman as WC. Plenty of tension, political back stabbing and uncertainty about wartime decision making carried by the performance of Oldman. Stephen Dillane is very good in it too tho. Think the acting carried the film but the toll that leading the nation in war had on WC drives the film above the political positioning. Courteous regarding the alcoholism without avoiding the fact he had issues and very stirring at times. The 'fight them on the beaches speech' was a prickly neck moment for me.
I love true wartime stories so this was right up my street so a solid 8/10 but I could see some people not enjoying the at times slow moving politics story telling. If Dunkirk had been a 4 hour film this would have been the first 2 hours of it and leads perfectly into the story told in Dunkirk.
A really good day of film watching.

I had forgotten what a good film Arlington Road is until watching it again today. An 8/10 for anyone that hasn't seen it and is looking for summat to watch.

The Shape of Water
This film defies simple description. Whether you are blown away or left cold by it depends on what you look for in a film. However, if you manage to avoid all the reviews (despite the fact that it's received a number of Oscar nominations) and just go see it, you'll witness a truly intriguing film that challenges all logic, but you still find yourself seeing it as a human drama rather than a sci-fi fantasy.
Oops, there I go trying to categorise it.
Guillermo del Toro, another David Lynch IMO.
