Was this kept a secret? Or did people know that Rob and Rastafish took part in this?

Didn't know Rastafish played much cash at all these days.

Looks great, would much rather watch these guys donk around than a bunch of pro's playing 'properly'.

Hi Yian,

I'm not sure what you mean by "a secret".

It was recorded two weeks ago, over three days, & we asked all the players not to mention too many details (specific pots etc) as we did not want any spoilers, but no, it was not "a secret" as such, we just chose not to mention it until the Shows had been finished & Edited.

Several of those involved Tweeted about the game on the days they played, including Neil, Sam, Matt Le Tissier etc.

I believe Rob will be penning a blog mentioning it shortly, & Neil's monthly column in the February edition of "Bluff" will make reference to it, too.

Got it in one.

The whole thing was designed to be a "fun" game, with tons of banter between them all.

It is aimed primarily at Sky Sports viewers, rather than hardcore poker pros.

Here's the Episode One line up, this is some stuff I wrote this morning which gives a flavour of it. (I have de-spammed this version for blonde).

Poker with a smile!

Starting on Tuesday February 5th, a new series of 6 x 1 hour Shows start on Sky Sports, & this is poker with a difference.

It is a Cash Game, but no hoodies or miserable minnies, this is poker with a smile.

Each episode features a brace of Sports Celebrities, most of them very familiar to Sky Sports viewers, together with a mixture of Poker Pros & amateur players playing poker how it should be played.

The first show includes….

Wayne Mardle, darts legend, Mr “Hawaii 501” himself, & a mean poker player, who has a 7th place finish in the prestigious GUKPT for over £14,000 to his credit.

More recently he commentated on Sky Sports fantastic coverage every night of the 2013 PDC World Darts Championships.

Norman Whiteside, who  was the youngest player ever to play in the World Cup, to score in a League Cup & FA Cup Final, & score a senior goal for Manchester United. He went on to play two World Cups, appear 38 times for Northern Ireland, & over 200 times for Manchester United.

These days, Norman still does Hospitality for Manchester United, and is a qualified podiatrist, as befits someone who was always good with his feet.

Neil Channing, arguably THE most well-known & popular senior UK Poker Tournament player. Neil  has cashed for over $3,000,000 on the Pro Poker circuit, including over $1,250,000 for winning the Irish Open, & $400,000 for 2nd in a WSOP event last summer.

Neil is also an enthusiastic Sports Bettor, & is hoping that the San Francisco 49ers take down this weekend’s Superbowl.

After the shows were filmed, Neil went straight from the Studio to Gatwick catch a 747 to Australia, where he cashed twice for north of $33,000. What a life!

Sam Razavi probably had more Tournament Poker success in more countries in 2012 than any other player. He cashed no less than 39 times across the globe, including 8 WSOP cashes, & in places as far afield as the Philippines, Egypt, China, Mauritius, Australia, Panama, Italy, Cambodia, New Zealand, India, not forgetting the good old British Isles.

Sam has accumulated over $1,000,000 in Live Cashes, and is a regular guest on Channel 861.

Colburn Tomlin, one of the most popular amateur  poker players on the UK Poker Circuit, who rejoices in the nickname of “Rastafish”.

Rastafish is LOUD, but it’s all in fun, & he has an impressive record of Tournament Wins totalling over $300,000.

His son, Gavin, is a professional footballer with Southend United, where he has netted 12 times already this season.

Completing the Episode One line up is Rob Yong.

Rob has lifetime cashes in excess of $300,000, & is a poker entrepreneur.

He is a wealthy & very successful businessman with a passion for poker. He used to have Poker “Home Games” – as we all did back in the day! - & enjoyed them so much he decided to open his own Poker Club in Nottingham.

It took three years & over £1,000,000 to obtain a full Gaming Licence, & build the Club, but it has thrived ever since & is by common consent one of the best poker Venues in Europe, if not the world.

So, quite a line up in the First Show. It will be transmitted at 10pm on Tuesday (Feb 5th) on Sky Sports 3, & will be repeated the next day. All 6 Episodes will be series-linked.

News of the other 5 episodes will appear on this page before transmission.

Highlight of Episode One?

Plenty of car crash hands, & let’s not give the game away, but when Wayne Mardle decides to try & take down a big pot, can you guess how much he bet?........

Sky, Poker with a smile. Just a bit.

I thought maybe they kept their participation under wraps also for spoiler purposes. Looking forward to this.

Pretty much that, yes.

I do hope you enjoy it, the whole idea is "fun", & there is plenty of laughs & banter, & some surprising pots.

For those who follow TfT, it was quite interesting for me to spend some time with Wayne Mardle, after he featured in arguably the greatest April Fool's joke ever on blonde last year.

I should add that the TD, or "Floor" was none other than Mr S Trumper. Very efficient he was, too.

What did he think about the prank?

He loved it. He said "100/1 to WIN it?  I was 1000/1 to PLAY it".

He & his wife were a lovely couple, & Wayne had plenty of banter at the table with the other lads. I'd not met him to speak to before, but I liked him very much, such as you can get to know someone over a couple of days.

Glad it all went well, he looks like he'd be good banter at the tables and I'm looking forward to watching the show. (when they sort the Sky out in my new house)

Rastafish nearly died on the way to or coming back from filming...

Driving down the A1 in his Merc, in the fast lane was a broken down car and full on 70mph smash into the back of it. Lucky to be alive.

Some interesting hands. People say the fish is lucky on the poker table...just wait :)

Ha!

Happy memories.

That was on Day One, I seem to recall, so will either be in tonight's episode, or next Tuesday's.

I can honestly say that it was a stressful three days as I can ever remember, getting poker players & studio Crew, cameras, sound, da de da all in the right place at the right time is the stuff of nightmares.

The end result was exactly what I wanted though - folks playing fun poker, laughing & joking.

For those not aware, the chap on the left is Wayne Mardle, Mr Hawaii-Five-O, who is a famous Darty bloke. A competent poker player too, with a GUKPT Final Table (from one attempt) on his CV.

Yes, I selected the "poker players", but not the Celebs.

Flushy was on the list, but fell ill days before & so had to miss it.

I should add - no disrespect intended to any of them - that the criteria was "fun" & ability to have good craic & banter, more so than pure poker ability.

Tonight, no, or not that I am aware, unless there is some way of which I am not aware to see Sky Sports Online. It will be on SkyGo in the UK, but I'm not sure it will work in Gib, or Spain.

The Show will, however, start airing on Channel 861 @ 9pm on Tuesday February 18th, & every Monday for 6 weeks thereafter, & that will be streamed Online alongside the telecast.

yeah that was my point. Sam and Neil are great pro's but also brilliant personalities.
Its a relative small buy in and designed to appeal to the wider audience. I actually think the two main personalities in Mardle and Whiteside were not the strongest. Rastafish and Rob were excellent too.

That was just a joke, Tighty. I enjoyed it. A marked difference from the EPT coverage that could be played in a library most of the time.

There are 5 more Shows in the current series. We are currently negotiating for a further Series, that is the top job on my desk right now. It has hit exactly the spot, & wider (non-poker) audience, we were aiming for. The proposed next series will be a different format.

Hartigan & Stapes absolutely nailed the Commentary, in that they did EXACTLY what we wanted, & asked them to do. We wanted the banter to be the main thing, but there was so much, it was difficult to know how James & Joe would squeeze any commentary in. But they nailed it, just little, sharp one-liners, as unobstrusive as possible, but still good stuff.

For the record, it is decidely NOT aimed at the poker market, that was not the Business Model. The poker world is miniscule compared to Football, Darts, Rugby, Horse Racing, & the Series is designed to give us exposure to those viewers, who may not play poker, or who are lapsed. There is a whole lot of Social-Media & SEO stuff behind the Shows, those are the real key of its success, & we are delighted with what those elements achieved, our SEO hits & Acquisition have gone through the roof.

We have James Haskell & Mick Fitzgerald in Episodes 3 & 4, so I'm hoping Mr Haskell does well this weekend. ;)

Episodes 5 & 6 include Matt le Tissier & Jimmy White.

That's the way forward imo. When I watch some poker I want to see a bit of banter, some loose spewy play, some all ins, some suck outs, etc. Essentially I'm after a bit of entertainment. Watching some 20 year olds in sunglasses staring at each other slowly 5 betting each other or whatever is dull. It has its place of course, but it's not for the masses.

Not seen this show. Is it online?

Great mix of players/personalities imo, the first UK Cash Game series was clearly more appealing to the seasoned poker community...and it's interesting watching 3-4 extroverts battling to get a word in edgeways! I like Channing in particular, always seems to have a good attitude... can't remember seeing him even mildy tilted before?! The benefits of a productive poker career I suppose!

There IS a market for "serious" televised poker, the EPT stuff is well-produced, but the viewing audiences are so tiny that they do not even register on the ratings. They are televised because they are Free Content to the Channel, & it is a handy late night filler. It is good stuff, but the appeal is extremely limited, it only appeals to the Poker mature, which is a very tiny market, & not of much commercial use to anyone. Everyone who plays to that Level already has all the Online Poker Accounts they need.

Our Show was specifically targeted at a different audience altogether, the sports fans, football, rugby, hoirse racing, snooker, as there is a huge audience of potential poker players & sign-ups there.

It is not Online at present, the repeated Episodes on Channel 861 will be Live Streamed, starting Monday February 18th, @ 9pm, every week for 6 weeks.

Don't worry John, no offence taken. I can get by on 861, where I just do the ABC stuff, but it was never a consideration for a Sky Sports Show, we wanted quality & credibility, & Hartigan & Stapes have it by the ton.

Yes, endlessly no doubt, I'll let you know the dates, Graham.

Part of the Business Model revolves around Social-media, which is very much part of Marketing these days. Before each Show, & Repeat, Sky Sports tweet about it, as do each of the Celebs, & it adds up to our name being Tweeted to over 1.5 million "Followers" before every single TX. The Editorial puff for each Show also gets picked up by google & the SEO goes ballistic.

Incredible how advertising has changed, it is quite a science now.

Thanks for your kind words about the commentary on the Sky Sports show, Tony.

But I think your analysis of the EPT shows is a little "off."

I guarantee that the sponsors would not be generating this content if it wasn't reaching a significant audience.  And, while they cater for the hardcore market, they are primarily pitched at a "mainstream" audience.  I'm reliably informed they succeed in attracting both new customers to sign-up to the site and old customers to re-activate their accounts.

FWIW, I think the cash game show being discussed in this thread is perfectly pitched at the Sky Sports market, and am not surprised it's driving new players to Sky Poker.

I love Stapes too, at the end of the day he is a comedian

In the early days of Hartigan/Stapes EPT commentary Stapes was given the poker analysis (done by Jimmy Fricke I believe) and basically added that to his comedy

I presume Stapes is doing the analysis himself these days ably assisted by JamesH who is the best in the business for me

Yep, I like both of them as well.  The format is really good, and in some ways more enjoyable than watching two Yanks playing pots of hundreds of thousands.  As the Old Fella has said, that will probably also appeal to those who only dabble a little bit at poker and attract more new players.

I certainly wouldn't be queuing up to see him perform.

I wiki'd him and apparently he was a centre back for Uxbridge Town in the 1950s

The episodes will start running on Sky Poker 861/free Webstream I *THINK* from the 18th Feb at 9.  Not 100pc sure but Tikay will likely confirm when gets a spare minute.

The episodes on 861 will have around 15 minutes more hands than the Sky Sports version as there are no ad breaks.

No idea whether they will be uploaded online, I assume it is a possibility tho as Sky Poker uploaded the last series on their YouTube channel.

Big fan of stapes and he is well liked in the poker community so you best get used to him!

He was mainly in the poker podcasting world before getting the gig on "the big game" and he self admittedly isn't a great strat guy but is there for corny one liners etc. I think his best work was two jacks in the hole/ huff and stapes which was a comedy podcast nothing to do with poker where you get a more rounded view of his comedy.

It starts next Monday (18th February) @ 9pm on Sky Poker, Channel 861, & that can also be viewed via internet stream. It will be (endlessly) repeated on Ch 861, but Episodes will always be 2 weeks behind the originals on Sky Sports for "Rights" reasons.

The Sky Sports episodes net out to 45 minutes, the Channel 861 versions will be a net 55 minutes per Show.

I have a full schedule of "repeat" tx dates on Ch 861 if you wish them.

Hope you enjoy it.

It's been really fun so far, not deadly serious but very good fun

only bad point for me is the onscreen graphics are driving me mad, the 4 colour decks are annoying and the very fast/large graphics are too much, other than that really enjoyable

Very good point about the 4 colour graphics.

This series has been my baby, from cradle to grave, & it has done exactly what I wanted, but it has stressed me to death to be honest. It exactly fulfilled the brief, though, & even though I had seen every moment of it being made, I was quite surprised when I first viewed the final Edit, as the 4 colour card graphics clashed with the 2 colour real deck.  It had never occurred to me, or anyone wlse, to be honest, until we viewed it.

Having said that, it is no big deal, & won't change anyone's views of the Show one way or another. The main drawback is that the Show is specifically aimed at those who currently do NOT play poker, (acquisition ftw) so for them of all people, it must be a tad confusing.

Planning for the next series (a little different in format but the same "smile, it's poker" message) has already begun, in which we will address areas we think could have been done better.

I like the 4-colour deck.  Some of the graphics are a bit strange though, and also a bit large at times.

You did a good job, thought the format was quite entertaining for new players. It would be interesting if you included one different random rec player each episode. Think it would be an good dynamic for people to see how joe bloggs could perform against high profile regs. If the message is about inclusion then including one sky viewer at the table and actually in the environment would lessen that fear factor for newcomers. Obv the times when the rec busts up the pros it would make dynamite appeal to that novice audience. And tbf with the standard of play I saw the rec would stand a good chance.

Incidentally I think that would work much better than digging up sports stars from the grave who just sit there check folding. Get people who can play and want to play. Maybe they can keep their profits like that other poker show (but don't do it like that other poker show which is horrible).

Virtually never watch poker on tv any more, so fortunately I won't have to get used to him, unless ESPN replaces Norman Chad with him for WSOP shows.

A "win your seat to the next series" promotion on the online site would be nice I agree, probably would have needed to plug it on air whilst this series is running though so maybe too late for that

Possibly, but it is the Sports Celebs, that attract the cross-sell audience, the non-poker audience from the much bigger audience their sports attract, & that gives us the sign-ups. It is about acquisition.

"from the grave". Fair point, but current day sporting icons cost a bunch of money. In fairness, I would not suggest you tell James Haskell to his face that he is "from the grave" either. He is on the large side, & prone to bouts of short-temper....... Incidentally, Mr Hsaskell joins the Show for Episodes 3 & 4, & he was highly entertaining. Rob Yong spoke disparagingly about his suit, & James then got on Rob's case about his hair, & they sparked off wonderfully.

But that misses the point, Karl - the Series was not commissioned to squeeze MPU from the existing player-base, that is already done in many other ways, including, & uniquely for a UK facing poker site, a 24/7 dedicated TV Channel.

This was specifically aimed at attracting new players, & was most definitely not aimed at the existing player-base. You have to do one or the other, mixing & matching dilutes the strength of the message.

Sat with the Rastafish tonight and apart from occasionally watching a film on his iPad he was his usual Funtime Guy. Pretty impressed with how he took flopping a set of 5's and coming up a flopped set of kings.

Devilfish probably would have done it for free Tony.

lol. Oh ok, granted he is not in vogue especially amongst younger poker players.  You of all people especially know that its a tough gig to attract wider audiences to minority/specialist sports.

Love em or hate em, you have to admire what Matchroom and the Hearns have done for darts/pool/fishing/ping pong etc.

Partly, maybe, but he was hampered by the edict that we specifically wanted the commentators NOT to talk over the Table Banter, & with that crowd at the Table, it was hard to find the free space, so Stapes was limited to short one-liners.

I bumped into him & Mr Hartigan yesterday, I have to say, Stapes is really quite a likeable character, a little abrasive perhaps, but very sharp. Stapes is currently London-based. Hartigan, of course, just drones on about filmy stuff.

Tonight, James Haskell & Mick Fitzgerald join the Table.

James Haskell gave Rob Yong some verbals, because Rob had a big stack of purples. (£100's). Lord Chaning interjected, "don't worry, he always starts with a big stack".

I think it's probably tradition more than anything else?  There are good reasons to have 4-colour decks (imo), for example, it would make it easier to see the suits of the cards for some people from the far end of the table.  I don't understand why a lot of places use cards with a very small font for the numbers/letters in the corners and really noticed the difference when I got back from Vegas and went back to DTD. The numbers and letters on the cards were enormous in comparison, and much easier to read.

That's pretty universal, DTD use huge font, most of the other casinos have a standard size..

Is that a tradition thing, or is there another reason for it?  For example, do they intentionally use the cards with a smaller index to stop other players from accidentally seeing your cards when you peak at them?

I love the cards at Dtd and love the fact all the tables are re clothed black. Purples and reds looked nice but I had problems with the red tables as when I squeezed any hearts or diamonds they looked black. I don't know anyone else with this problem but it baked my head that red cards looked black.

I was watching the hand that Neil hit a flush on the end with the king of diamonds and the mrs started talking to me. I asked her to wait a minute as I wanted to hear what the players were saying in this hand. She turned to watch the hand which featured Neil, looking like a bank manager dealing with a client,  giving Rastafish, dressed in white jacket and with shades on some talk before betting about 995, it had both players in view on screen and she very lightly whispered to me

'Which one of them is Rastafish?'

I was watching the hand that Neil hit a flush on the end with the king of diamonds and the mrs started talking to me. I asked her to wait a minute as I wanted to hear what the players were saying in this hand. Was almost in tears at the thought that Neil could even have been considered a 'Rastafish'

I asked her rather mockingly to take a wild guess at which one was Rastafish, unsurprisingly she guessed correctly.

thought last nights show was v good, helped by a few mini coolers and the '6 8' hand between Neil and Rob was one of those TV poker gold hands.

Some classic quotes in there too.

Neil's "is it one idiot to a hand?"

And Robs rubs about Rastafish glasses meaning he can't see flushes was classic.

And of course Rastafish defiantly claiming that he was A WINNING POKER PLAYER :D

To be fair, Redmond did say on fb last night after seeing himself "not to self, never chew gum on TV"

Thinly-veiled "A TV Poker Player Befriended Me" brag

The fold to Rob by Neil when he had the straight was unbelievable... to put Rob Yong specifically on 6-8, given how aggro he was and has been all series, wow... easy to say when you see the cards & presume you're calling best case for a split etc etc..... but it's Rob Yong! :)

I really enjoyed it too but for one thing.... that Redmond fella chewing his gum with mouth wide open. No class lol

Just goes to show that money can't buy you class

lol, bit harsh? Comes across on Sky Poker as a decent bloke, obv just failing due to that regulation class divider that is the chewing of gum with one's mouth open

Yes, it was a tongue-in-cheek conversation, dwayne. No harm intended.

BobAlike and I nevertheless see ourselves as virtuous fellows who, from time to time, feel duty-bound to limit if not eradicate the social faux pas which so readily threaten to litter our screens.

All good sport.

haha, fair do's, and it's good that you're vigilant... what starts as an isolated open-mouthed gum chewing event can develop into a pandemic before long

Posted on Hendon Mob after conversation with Neil

Hi

I met Neil the other day and he mentioned to me about this forum thread and a few other comments on facebook, so I thought I would post my view to anyone that was interested;

Pre Flop - suited Queen, 6 handed, just a speculative £25 raise

Flop - just a £75 continuation bet

Turn - Neil bets £25, I take this as weak so I float turn with intention check-bet or bet-reraise the river

River - Neil bets over pot £275, this bet confused me and I fall completely into his trap and make a spewy raise on the basis that Neil has bet a + pot amount in order NOT to be re-raised - so he actually has a hand that he can't call a RR.

River 2: I RR. Neil min re-raises me back, he clearly has a 6, but I don't see how he can have ever have 86 here because he would RR more as I am repping a 6 and he would want to get be paid handsomely with 86.

River 3: I feel if I re-raise his back here he will fold a 6, and I pick an amount that I would RR if I really had 86 - he does fold his 6.

There is a lot of history with me and Neil - we are friends and have played together on and off for years, I think the fold is fine because I expected him to fold his 6 here. In terms of who is good/bad, I am a businessmen who plays poker maybe 6-12 times a year, Neil is a professional who earns a living from poker and has done for years, I'm quite sure he would skin me over time if we played regularly enough.

Cheers Rob
