You can be sure the locals aren't paying mad prices.  They laugh at the rest who pay up and head 'round the corner to places you're on about.  They're the ones to ask.

lol, the locals sure do care about finding cheap food.

I found the food prices very reasonable, I can't remember being charged at all? BOCCCCCEE!!!

Luke Schwartz has made a complete clown of himself again. The guy is an embarassament to British poker; what more does he have to do before the EPT tells him he's not welcome any more?

Ah "small paycheck" prob more than the reporters yearly salary.

So, the reporter should be so impressed by that, that they can't stand up for the decency of the game?

I'm sure the reporters find it hilarious and cringeworthy when a poker player thinks that the big amounts of money flying around make him important/someone to be admired/allowed to act like a clown.

Yeah he shouldn't do this, yeah the reporters have a right to report what they want, however why is there the need for the word 'small' in that sentence? It just makes the reporter look petty and biased imo

You are reading way too much into one word.

Fact is that Schwartz is classless.  He should be delighted that he is playing in these events but instead treats everyone with disrespect.  He has supposedly won fortunes in cash, but in the fog of shared accounts etc who knows. I don't think he has ever won a poker tournament.

I think the reporter is biased. And I think that's fine; he wasn't necessarily before this episode, unless he had witnessed the pathetic behaviour of this guy before. However, from the way he writes, he has obviously felt annoyed at seeing a respectful and friendly game destroyed by him, and I say big respect to him for feeling that. In any other profession or in a sport, it would be the commentator's job to criticise someone if their behaviour has so obviously been an insult to the other people around them and to the game, and  this should be the case in poker.

I don't think there is such thing as "petty" when you are writing about someone who consistently insults whoever he likes without reason,
and who has actually risked destroying the game here by sending chips flying all over the place. I think it should be the reporter's perogative to say whatever he likes, and he has done well to mainly voice his displeasure in a positive way.

But if he had written "why is this self-obsessed clown allowed to be offensive to decent people and behave like a spoilt child without any consequences?" I don't think even that would have been petty; I think it would have been completely fair.

Luke Schwartz comes across as quite a comical guy and I kinda like him. For sure his outbursts lack class but class isn't a fundamental requirement for playing poker. I think his moody ways actually test the character of other players around the table and those that fail in the face of his nonsense expose their own weaknesses. I don't think his petulance is anything unusual in sport, I mean I remember watching John McEnroe as a kid, now there was a petulant guy. And I think it's a bit rich to suggest he's bad for the game, look at the match fixing in other sports eg today's revelations about John Higgins, and the drug taking in athletics, now that's actually bad for a game. This is just a kid letting off some steam. I also would suggest that playing poker in EPT for big bucks shouldn't really be classed as a "friendly game", you're gonna be confronted with lots of different players with conflicting attitudes and sometimes strong emotions. As long as nobody gets hurt it's ok imo. That said, if he did swing a punch at me I would happily kick the shit out of him.

is monte carlo so expensive??

can anyone give any examples?

Cheeseburger and five chunky chips - 28 euros
Ham and cheese baguette - 10 euros
Packet of fags - 11 euros (although they do throw in a free box of matches, so a bargain really)
A beer (nice, mind you) 13 euros
Just had 'continental' breakkie delivered to room - four bread/croissant/jam/coffee/orange juice - around 35 euros inc delivery

From the mini-bar:
Coke - 6 euros
One of those (tiny) mini packs of Pringles - 6 euros
If you need balloons for a party, a pack of three is available from the mini bar at 6 euros

etc etc

Of course, the best value in Monte Carlo is http://www.pokerstarsblog.com - absolutely free!
I think i will open a chinese restaurant there seems ok to charge a premium in MC

i am sure the lease on premises will be cheap

roll up roll up get ur fresh meat here

Flushy, please appreciate the irony of your statement, given that you're the part-owner of a site at least partially known for the independency of its updaters' views. Wink

I wasn't around around at the time, but the people updating told me it was a pretty jovial and friendly atmosphere until Schwartz busted and went on his apparently petty rant.

However you do have a point in that updating a tournament can be easily compromised if someone has a seemingly bad reputation or annoys a journalist. These days, so much tournament coverage is done by poker sites, that it's more like propaganda than real tournament reporting. Independent updating is very unlikely to ever be profitable, but right now I think it's probably more needed than ever.
