But for the sheer ingenuity of his excuse, he kept his job. Many years later, he had THE most fearful & bizarre accident when working for me, so bizarre that it topped the train/teeth story by a mile, but this time it was, sadly, true. He recovered eventually (minus his manhood), & I got successfully prosecuted by the Health & Safety Executive for failing to supply him with bicycle clips....!

Work THAT one out.

Cheesy  I am not going to ask.  It sounds too painful...    I don't want to have nightmares.

ok.  go on then    explain.   bicycle clips?

Trust me Sark, you WOULD have nightmares of I told you the story. It was ghastly. I can think of no worse nightmare than what happened to this guy.

Bicycle clips are worn at the base of the trouser.

They prevent your cloth getting caught up in the spokes and allow you to walk amongst ferrets in relative safety.

High pressure water up the pants leg?

Got it in one Tom.

He was jetting a blocked drain with a high pressure - 4,000 lbs p.s.i - drain jetter. The nozzle on these rotate at high velocity, thrust forward by water pressure.

He was stood astride an open manhole cover, feeding the pipe down the drain, when it encountered a tough obstruction, & the pipe turned back on itself. At great speed, it exited the manhole, straight up his baggy trouser leg, right up to his groin, & the rest can be left to the imagination.

The accident occurred in Great Yarmouth of all places - what a pain THAT is to get to - & we ferried his wife across there daily to visit him in hossie for 8 weeks.

The HSE investigated, & I assumed we'd be cleared, it was one of those freak accidents. But they "found" against us, said we should have anticipated such an occurrence (what?) & fined us £3,000.

Accidents in Industry are not only painful, they are expensive.

We brushed up on Safety after that, & won the ROSPA Gold Award for Safety 7 years running.

I have done many H&S courses and the general rule is that if you are hurt in the course of doing your job the company IS responsible, they then decide to what degree.

Of course not.

We have some of our alloys cut with water jets, i'm talking about 12" by 6" blocks of material resistant to heat, distortion etc. etc. and the water jets slice it like hot knives through butter.
Incredible technology.
