just to get all legal on you all here but did you know its not actually illegal to download anything from the net (that includes music movies etc, copyrighted or not) what is actually illegal is the UPLOADING of copyrighted material. the main reason that people have been lead to believe its the other way round is because not many people actually go as far to upload things and it scares people outta downloading them. I'm not saying i condone this or not just stating a fact.

Its pretty similair to copyrights on cds etc, for example if you have several hundred albums on disc that are not original then as long as you dont have the covers etc with it you are in no breach of copyright for several stupid reasons. And also if you own the original of anything you are legally entitled to download a backup of this, although this isnt often the case i agree

no, you're missing what I'm saying.

there are NO benefits to the musician from illegal file sharing / downloading

the relatively new legal download phenominon may help musicians.

the singles market has been dying a death long before the piracy was the issue because many people simply buy the LP. when I see a video or hear a song I like I go out and BUY THE ALBUM. I have some albums where I only like one or two songs but I also have many where that gamble has delivered a top class recording. I do think it's wrong to download a song / album and if you like the entire album buy it (most don't they simply burn it) or if they only like half of it, just keep what they like..

i say filesharing a free to air tv program isn't illegal no matter what the law says as long as its uploaded in the manner in which the tv company broadcast it

so your now saying that if one of the cadets i trained to fire a rifle becomes a sniper shooting people in the street its my fault?

I'm not saying it's your fault, Im saying there's an implied responsibility. as a soldier that must surely be reduced but as a MA instructor I must carefully select who I will teach because if one of my guys or girls pushes their thumbs through someones eyes over a spilt pint I am partially to blame. I don't think n armed forces instructor can take blame for misuse of info because you're not at liberty to select your students.

I downloaded the 2004 WSOP and WSOP Tournament of Champions on bit torrent. It didn't stop me watching it on Challenge or buying a legit DVD version. I can partly see your point Adam, but most downloders buy the stuff as well.

no, 'most' downloaders don't

Lets no go into serious legal arguments here because we all know laws are ridiculous ie its not illegal to take drugs but it is illegal to possess them or sell them, how can you take them if they are not in your possesion? Unless you stole them so they were somebody elses but then could you be done for theft???
All we were interested in at the start of this thread was do we get to see Kates threpnies? If not are they available for viewing in any other televisual media? Previous film/stolen home movie etc?Huh??

OK, I think that is a slight change but either way, I still disagree. As I have already said, I have downloaded a lot of songs illegally (or not as BlueWolf is now saying) but then bought full cd's. That is a significant benefit to the artist because I would not have done otherwsie.
Also, just for clarification, I generally will not download the full album, just a few songs. If i like them or think there is potential, I will get it.
As for whethre the gamble paid off or not in buying it....I knew it would soon come back round to gambling / poker!! Full circle!!! Ha ha. Good debate, I have enjoyed it. Its wrong, but I will use it to benefit me and I believe also benefit the artist. This is fast turning in to the biggest thread in the history of Blonde, lol.
OK a short poll.....
I have taken two votes, RedSimons and mine. We both buy the stuff so, based on that, I can confirm that 100% of people DO INDEED buy the original.
The End

this is why I hate debating this subject. I generally end up me vs the world.

all I'm saying is that everytime you download something you could have bought the knock on effect is that struggling musicians / artists / writers are suffering as a result, many of whom will never reach the masses as aresult.

I personally know many people who claim to down load and then, if they like it buy.

I also know for a fact they have dozens of films and hundreds of tracks stored. not saying you and simon are the same, but it's very common

any way I'm done with this because it really does get me wound up and I don't want to alienate myself from blondites I normally get on fine with.

I don't actually think this is the right place for this discussion and I don't think it should be left on the board now we've had our lively debate.

Agreed, many people do. I can only do my part. I dont think you are alienating yourself at all Adam, I have full respect for your views and comments. Maybe, just maybe, this thread will be beneficial as it may make people think twice about doing it.
I enjoyed the discussion.

the people that download and never buy would proberly never buy anyway

they would tape it off the radio or video it of the tv

but they normally never buy the stuff

the people that would buy the stuff normally buy more than they would of

because they download stuff if they like it they buy it if they dont like it they normally delete

and they normally end up buying more because they downliad stuff they would never normally try

but personally i hate modern music and unless someone finds a way to bring elvis back fromn the dead i wont be downloading or buying any

May be completely out of line this but imo struggling artists/writers etc should maybe consider a different calling in life. I am not having a go at you here Adam and please dont take offence to what I say but if you arent successful could it not mean you aren't any good? I may be just playing devils advocate here but I think the people who get hurt most by Illegal downloads are the huge artists that are downloaded in the 1000s or even millions. The small yocal/focal bands who sell there stuff after gigs arent likely to be searched out on download sites are they? The eminems/michael jacksons of the world may lose a few million quid but they can afford it (and one of the 2 doesnt deserve his liberty never mind any cash but dont get me started on that one). Just my twopenneths worth anyway (it really is like THM on here tonight lol)
