do you think its worth doubling the stakes at the start and having twice as many chips in play? or is it a waste of money?

100% yes, can't stress that enough!

Can you explain why ??

Have you written an article about it ??

Wink

I have won 6 rebuys from 2183761 attempts. If you dont want to listen you don't have too.

you might well be right, but can you explain why?

Nobody has explained to the Original Poster WHY he should take his rebuy immediately.

I am not the best versed to explain this coherently, but, essentially Mr Mariners, the value of your chips DECREASES as the tourney progresses, so yes take them early. There are plenty of other jutifications, too, but they are all, really, related to my point.

Look at it like this.

£10 rebuy, Starting Stack 2,000, Blinds 10-20. Thus £10 buys you 100 x Big Blinds.

At the end of the rebuy period the Blinds are now (let us say for ease of maths) 100-200. So your £10 only buys you 10 x Big Blinds now.

I think.....

Errrm, right but wrong.

The rebuy you make str8 away is worth LESS than if you are cleaned out and rebuy, these is no denying that, it is the nature of changing chip equity. The point though is although the chips are worth a smaller amount, in a winning players hands they are still worth more than the face value.

An example:

Say you are in a £10 rebuy and are a very good player, lets assume 2000 starting chips. Your 2k chips may be worth £20, reflecting your skill. Now if you were to take an instant rebuy, the 2nd 2k would not be worth £20, they would be worth slightly less (see sklansky for changing chip equity) say £18. However you are stil buying £18 worth of chips for £10, so although its not as good a deal as the first buyin it is still +EV.

Hope that helps.

im not going to bother digging my sklansky out because surely there is a more obvious reason why it is better to double up at start if my tired, cold-infected brain is actually working properly. It pays to double up because:-

(i know it would obviously not work as ideally as this but.....)
First Hand of Rebuy: 1) You fold your junk
                             2) Player x and y (both with starting 2000 chips go all in)
3)For sake of it Player x wins and doubles up and with blinds now has at minimum 4020 chips)

Second Hand of Rebuy: 1) You look down at premium hand eg. 10 10,JJ,QQ,KK,AA,AKs *or at least an all in hand
                                  2) Player x from previous hand (with 4020 chips) comes over the top all in.
                                  3) You call, have him dominated and double up.

Now this is the important part:If you did not double up at the start you have won just 2000 chips off player x from a possible 4000!
Surely enough reason for doubling up at start.
Because as long as you find your premium hand after the very first hand there is going to be someone on your table with more than the starting hand (anything up to 4000 chips) giving you maximum value from your hand. (max- doubling to  8000)
If you start with 2000 chips you are surley only getting ~50% value in your first double up meaning you have to find another suitable hand to do reach the possible value of starting with 4000!

I hope that makes sense.
I even started to confuse myself by the end!!!
