Gerrard has retired from international football. Needs to see how long he can prolong his career at Liverpool. Did very well last season, and with Can and others in the side we won't be as reliant on him this season - but hopefully he can remain fit and able to play when we need him.

How long before the big clubs push for this model!

Wonder what the spread would have been if Liverpool hadn't had the incredible season they had, playing such attractive football that neutrals seemed to want to watch as well?

Never going to happen. This is always going to be skewed by the number of games shown for each club. The average viewing figures show a 2:1 swing from the less popular teams to the most popular. Click to see full-size image. |
There is also a larger likelihood that smaller teams will have match day revenues affected more from a televised game (attendance reduction due to availability of game on TV and potential kickoff scheduling), and teams that have more games shown are also going to pick up more matchday advertising revenue, so the gulf in TV payouts suggested in the first image are more than likely already there in overall revenues, just being created from other revenue sources.

Also, need all the teams in the league to make the league. Would be madness for the bigger clubs to get an even larger share of the revenue.

Meanwhile in Spain
Barca ~ €150m Real Madrid ~ €150m Athletico Madrid <€50m Most teams ~€25m
Makes the uk TV market payouts look socialist

You kill the goose which lays the golden egg though by making the product more and more uncompetitive and eventually punters stop watching due to boredom.

Man Utd/Liverpool etc are fully aware of the appeal of having a "strong 20" imo and having a great overall product each time they come to the TV negotiating table. They know long term they make more money with the current model.
I know some people love it, but I find La Liga utterly dull even if there are the occasional great matches. A large part of that has to be the TV arrangements.

Tighty's stats on Liverpool being top of the poll might have something to do with the BT Sport love in on their recent adverts in their mauling of Arsenal which come across a little sickening. Nothing to do with Liverpool being the team, but just being too for one team over the others seems a little crass.

Alot of Gooners have unsubscribed, that'll show BT ! In fairness I dunno why they went after Arsenal with them ads, but no point in getting that upset about it to cancel your sub!

I don't think they deliberately went after Arsenal as such, just they had that game live and it was probably the most interesting game they showed all season, I'd guess it probably had the best viewing figures. It was a pretty bad idea for an advert though.
