All Japanese words, when transcribed into latin characters, end in a vowel or an 'n'.

Well that's interesting, too. (To geeks like me).

Why "n", does it have special meaning in Japan, or is it just a quirk of the language?

Meanwhile, over at Diary Red, they are discussing Wickes DIY Centres.

Japanese doesn't have an alphabet as such.  Instead it uses kanji (Chinese characters) and kana which is a syllabary consisting of 50-ish characters (times two).  All of these are pronounced with a final vowel sound, with the exception of ん  - which is pronounced similarly to 'n' or sometimes 'm'.

Had a weekend up in Newcastle, so plenty of "get rid of Ashley" chatter from the "faithful" after their bubble well & truly burst & they got turned over by Norwich. (Did you ever hear a more ironic description of a NUFC fan than "faithful"?!)

However from that came a Norwich blast from the past, as I was listening to some football quiz tosh yesterday on the wireless, & they were debating the best volleyed goals ever. The answer is irrelevant & subjective, & most people have their own favourite one (I think Goss, for Norwich v Leeds won it), but as an irreverant aside, this one was mentioned, as a half-decent "backheel volley".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7eqWfG4ZI6Y&feature=related

From that, I started looking up some of the goals that Roberto Mancini scored in his time with (mainly) Sampdoria, & it must be said, I had not realised quite how decent he was. Deffo "tidy", & the sort of player who might still do a good job these days. After a dodgy start at City, I've rather taken to him - seems quite a classy sort of guy.

On the Danny Baker Show yesterday – which, almost impossibly, continues to improve – they discussed the Hawaiian alphabet, claiming it only has 12 letters. This, in turn, explained why – according to Danny - they have such peculiar word construction, with letters repeated so frequently in Hawaii, as in….

Hawaii (2 x a, 2 x i),

Honolulu (2 x o, 2 by l, 2 by u)

Waikiki (3 x 1, 2 x k)

And so on.

So I went googling last night, & now I'm unsure if Danny was a bit off the mark there, or right on the money. Verification awaited from gatters, of course.

What I did find interesting though was this, from wiki……

Hawaiians had no written language prior to western contact, except for petroglyph symbols. The modern Hawaiian alphabet, ka pīʻāpā Hawaiʻi, is a variety of the Latin alphabet. Hawaiian words end only in vowels, and every consonant must be followed by a vowel. The Hawaiian alphabetical order has all of the vowels before the consonants, as in the following chart.

Aa Ee Ii Oo Uu Hh Kk Ll Mm Nn Pp Ww
ʻ/a/ /e/ /i/ /o/ /u/ /h/ /k~t/ /l/ /m/ /n/ /p/ /v~w/ /ʔ/

So, every genuinely Hawaiian words ends with a vowel, & every consonant is followed  a vowel. If only the English language were half so simple.

you don't need me. you've listed 13 letters at the bottom of your post. 13 is different from 12 therefore you can call bullshit yourself. people are so lazy sometimes, I'm not always here, you need to do some things for yourselves

That Mancini goal was similar to this.

I was there at that game, we really should have won the 1st game but got well and truly tonked in the replay.

Pretty good time to be Norwich fan at the moment, doubt we will ever reach the heights of finishing top 3 as we did in the early 90's. It is kind of sad that this is probably as good as it will ever get in modern football for us.

Enjoy it then. They are doing rather better than many expected, too - what a great thing to see. I think Stephen Fry gets the credit. In truth, I hope they survive in the Prem for a few seasons, it can't be a bad thing to gain a Norwich or two, & lose a Wigan or a Bolton.

Huh ?? That chatter never went away and is very much justified, also not sure how our bubble has "well and truly burst", we played alright with half our team missing, sadly our strength in depth is probably the weakest of any team in the league. As far as being faithful, despite despising the chairman we still had over 40k, closer to 50k fans at every single Championship game after being relegated, how many Premiership clubs have less than 40k capacity and struggle to even fill there ground to 3/4 capacity ? Really not sure why you'd pick Newcastle fans out to question there support.

PS It was good to catch up at the weekend  Wink

Just how good is Luke Donald? He seems - to me, anyway - to lack a little charisma, but results speak, & what a season he has had.

Whilst discussing his incredible season yesterday, someone said that at one stage of the season, he went 450 holes without three-putting a green. Is that true, anyone know? Seems quite a stat, if true.
