I'm so happy to be in glorious Newcastle.

<3

I had some time to kill in Newcastle once, (Admittedly it was during the summer) so I went for a good look around. It's a fascinating city, absolutely steeped in history. Find a quiet spot and you can almost hear the industry that spawned the buildings calling out to you.

Newcastle is also absolutely steeped in scantily clad girls, even during the winter.

(You don't have to find a quiet spot the hear them calling out).

it most certainly is. exploring the regenerated parts of the city just along the river in Ouseburn/Byker is one of my favourite things to do. nothing beats a cold pint on a warm day sitting by the tyne!

The stormy weather, as evidenced in Scotland a week ago, heads South this week, starting tonight, with gale force winds & torrential rain expected. Extreme Weather AND Flood warnings have been issued this morning.

Young Sam Holden came along to the Newcastle Sky Poker Tour on Saturday......

In fact, it's Ian LeBruce, & the wig was a sort of Holden celebration, as Ian had a piece of Sam's action. Proper bink that, nice one Ian.

LilDave gives forth on Estate Agents, Lawrence Gosney, Tesco, & home-made cakes.

Hands up who thought LilDave had a whisk for cake-making?

Rumours of very exciting news from the Large Hadron Collider about the search for the Higgs boson.

"I think we may get indications that are not consistent with its non-existence" mutters CERN...

Which probably makes more sense to me than this, but it's jaw-dropping reading.....

http://nyti.ms/sKzMNz

Incidentally, Radio 4 ran a whole Show about the gentleman after whom the "Higgs Bosun", "Higgs Field" & all that malarky is named, Peter Higgs. I believe he still lives in Edinburgh, & he is now over 80.

This is just disgusting.

You should warn people before you send them completely unawares to a Daily Mirror link.

Not sure I care too much about the FP thing. Could possibly have explained during the program, but it's not like they've faked the whole thing.

Absolutely. Where does he think this is - Tom's Diary?

As to the FP "hoax", I really don't see the problem. It will not prevent me admiring it immensely,

She really was an "Action Dealer", if there is such a thing.

First up, J-J v A-A, it comes 2-3-4-5......6 (with four spades, neither player had a spade), chop it up.

But she excelled later. The eventual winner raises with J-J, & the BB thinks he's at it, & shoves on him. Winner makes the call with J-J, & finds he has walked into.....2-3 offsuit.

I'm commentating, & you need to ramp up the sweat a bit to keep the Railers interested - "you never know, stranger things have happened, let's see if he gets a sweat on the flop".

The flop of J-10-7 was as good as it gets for J-J v 2-3, but I drone on "well 2-3 man still has perfect perfect for the chop". And off rolls the 8, followed by the 9.

Just as well it was not Online.

On the Danny Baker Show yesterday – which, almost impossibly, continues to improve – they discussed the Hawaiian alphabet, claiming it only has 12 letters. This, in turn, explained why – according to Danny - they have such peculiar word construction, with letters repeated so frequently in Hawaii, as in….

Hawaii (2 x a, 2 x i),

Honolulu (2 x o, 2 by l, 2 by u)

Waikiki (3 x 1, 2 x k)

And so on.

So I went googling last night, & now I'm unsure if Danny was a bit off the mark there, or right on the money. Verification awaited from gatters, of course.

What I did find interesting though was this, from wiki……

Hawaiians had no written language prior to western contact, except for petroglyph symbols. The modern Hawaiian alphabet, ka pīʻāpā Hawaiʻi, is a variety of the Latin alphabet. Hawaiian words end only in vowels, and every consonant must be followed by a vowel. The Hawaiian alphabetical order has all of the vowels before the consonants, as in the following chart.

Aa Ee Ii Oo Uu Hh Kk Ll Mm Nn Pp Ww
ʻ/a/ /e/ /i/ /o/ /u/ /h/ /k~t/ /l/ /m/ /n/ /p/ /v~w/ /ʔ/

So, every genuinely Hawaiian words ends with a vowel, & every consonant is followed  a vowel. If only the English language were half so simple.
