I watched about 10 mins of that Africa programme. Baby elephant was dying, mum decided to stay with it til it died. It made me think, why don't they feed it rather than film it?

They discussed it in the end section.  http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b01pwtsj/Africa_Savannah/ 53 minutes in.

I learned ("learnt"?) a new word today, (thanks to AndrewT) & it is terrific one.

shonky

I had never heard it before, but it is one of those words which, when seen in context, the meaning becomes immediately obvious. A perfect word. Not at all shonky

Go to the next stage, and you have 'shonkily' Can't believe you have missed out on shonky for so long.

Amazing stuff. I had assumed they would salvage the vessel, repair refurb & refit it, & it would then continue life (under a new name of course), but it seems from that as if they plan to dismantle it. Some story.

The Wiliam Hague voice?

Well yes...... People in the media spotlight, with ultra high profile, especially Politicians, are soft targets for the mockers & dissers, especially with Social-Media being what it is now, & I try very hard not to think like that, it's terribly unfair & oh-so-easy to mock from afar. But Mr Hague's flat, monotone, condescending & patronising tones do tend to grate just a tad. As Foreign Minister, I dread to think what he sounds like to those who do not understand the English class system well. I genuinely have to turn the wireless or TV off when he is speaking. I'm sure, of course, I have the same effect on most.

I don't think they should. Nature has to do it's thing. Where would it all end if Man tried to stop lions killing antelopes, or elephant foals from dying? It just happens. It is Nature's control system, & it works amazingly well.

I mentioned the Golden Age of Nature Documentaries yesterday, but there is one side I don't much enjoy. In many of these programmes, following, say, meerkats, lions, monkeys or whatever, they insist on giving them all names.

"And so, Lawrence the Lion went hunting for food to feed Leo & Lenny, his two baby lions".

Aaarggghhhh.  I just can't watch that nonsense.

This may not be the place but there was an excellent poker show on in the background.  Could you talk us through the JT off vs A9 off all in pre flop hand?  The kids thought it was all a bit standard, but you seemed a touch surprised!

Excellent poker show? Hmm......

I seem to recall this was quite a big pot, a 4 figure sum?

Just seemed to me to be a ton of money to get all-in pre with J-10. The game of Hold Em has moved on from when I used to play a lot of it, & the fact that it surprises me that we get it in so light these days is why I am now officially crap at NLHE & no longer play the cash version. I honestly don't think I could get £1,000+ plus in pre with J-10. Aces, yeah, maybe.

I genuinely feel I can still hold my own at most levels in Omaha, in fact I think I am playing Omaha as well or better than I ever did, but the NLHE boys play way too good & fast for me these days. Not gamble in me. Jeez, the game has changed.

I had a bit of a shocker last night actually, I misread several hands. We got a ton of e-Mails & Tweets though, usually a good sign. Some were even quite nice.

There was a com moment when the Gallery had some technical problems, we could not show any hands or graphics briefly, so they needed us to fill.

"Can you waffle for a bit?" they said.

Waffle? You bet I can. No prob, specialist subject that.

Didn't catch the whole hand but saw it go £75 JT off in the cut off, button went £300 with A9 off and then cut off jammed JT off for £1300.  A9 off ran his clock down and eventually called.  Wasn't rewarded as the board gave JT off a straight.

I assume it was 2/4 but as I didn't see the start I wasn't sure.

Not convinved they were playing too well for you.  I play a lot of poker online and I was struggling to follow the reasoning.

Too sharp, Geo, too sharp.

How was Xmas in Edinburgh?

Did you get the grandkids out & about?

Do they celebrate New Years Eve up in those parts? You know, like, properly?

Xmas was a wee bit quieter as both Grandkids went to their other grandparents for Xmas day, can't complain as we have had them every year before.

Spent a whole day at the Xmas wonderland with the grandaughter just before xmas and had a ball, though very costly. Ice skating, a shot on each ride and then £5 odds for a burger.

Family day at Jenners today and we gave them choices for holidays in the summer

Sun and Sand
Motorhome, travelling to pre chosen places to visit/walk
Chalet/cabin either in Lake district or the Highlands

Was chuffed when the kids chose either chalet/cabin or motorhome (kids these days, really know what side the bread is buttered eh.)

New Year is generally a non starter for so many of us up North these days. Mrs and I sat watching the Castle fireworks from the spare room window with a good brew (loose tea.) Then it was off to bed

Best wishes for 2013
