I recognise that this is for you what an article on apostrophes would be for me, so be aware of possible gentleman moments:

When does tarmac melt?
On a related and even more interesting subject for you, why aren't more roads made of concrete?
The M271 in Southampton is mostly concrete and seems to have been pretty much repair free for as long as I can remember.
More expensive, give a much harsher and harder ride, and when they do fail, repairs cost a fortune. Poor drainage characteristics, too. In winter, frost damage is prevalent, too. Has to be laid in bays, hence "thump thump thump" when driving on it.
Wears far better than macadam though.
Bet you love the thump, thump, thump though. Makes you think you're driving a train.
No no no, completely different.
You FEEL the thump thump thump, it is not pleasing, whereas on a train, you HEAR the clackety clack & it is reassuring & kind on the senses.
CWR has robbed us of the clackety clack, & almost the sensation of speed, & movement.
You can't have travelling without moving, that'd be virtual insanity.
Ooh ooh, wa ha.......

I felt lucky to have heard it Tom, we flicked on the radio in the car and it was programmed to Radio 4 as I had been listening to a little cricket earlier, so just left it on and listened to the show. It made me realise how good radio is, I mean you could read the transcript of that interview and James reading his poem but his struggling for breath and the feeling he showed just wouldn't come across.
I really dislike the way that news is used these days, A kind of excuse to provide entertainment 24 hours a day and maybe that is one of the reasons that a reputable news station can broadcast the supposed names of 4 pilots in a serious crash without first making sure they are correct and secondly not seeing what they were broadcasting. Fine if it is rolling sports non news on SSN but now real, serious news is treated the same way. Almost like episodes in soap opera's or fictional drama in some cases
I've vowed to buy myself a good radio for my office and instead of hours of background noise from bad sports news channels and the same 30 minute news with a different tint on the news channels I am going to listen to so much more interesting things. That Pick of the week link featured some really interesting stuff about Shirley Williams, cricket and covered a fear of sabotage to the Olympic opening ceremony. All really interesting stuff.
I'm a huge Radio 4 fan Phil.
I've been trying to convert Tony but he's always too busy head banging to Kerrang.
Behave......
Radio 4, & the BBC generally, is superb, no other country has such a wonderful resource, at such a low cost.
Talking of Kerrang, I was watching MTV Classics last night, & they showed an advert for Sky Poker of all things, featuring Charlotte Jackson. Tapping differernt markets, or what?!

On the Fred Thread, Tighty does a Daily Report, & he somehow squeezed in this word today.....
recumbentibus
You ever heard of that?
I did not have the faintest idea what that meant, a completely new word to me, so I went googling & found this.....

When does tarmac melt?
Ooohhhhh.
Ashphalt does not melt as such, it cannot liquify, but it does soften in high temperatures, though only to the wearing course (described in the article as the surface layer).
The sub base subsides though, due to contraction of the sub surface in dry weather.
Never happens with concrete paved road surfaces though. Concrete rocks, see?
Tom will be so jealous you posted this here.
Can't remember if I read about this here or somewhere else but have you heard about the Pitch Drop experiment?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pitch_drop_experiment
The summary is in 1927 a professor melted some pitch and poured it into a sealed funnel. He let it settle for 3 years and then cut it open to let it 'flow'.
The first drip fell 8 years after opening the funnel. The last drop to fall was the 8th in 2000.
The next drop is expected sometime later this year and you could be the first person to ever witness a drop by checking the webcam here:
http://smp.uq.edu.au/content/pitch-drop-experiment
From the wiki page pitch has a viscosity approximately 230 billion times that of water!
Awesome! Never heard of that, but it sort of makes sense.
In Bryson's ASHONE he states that glass has the same property, & over time, gravity has an effect on it, such that, if you check the thickness of stained glass windows in very old churches, they will be thicker at the bottom due to the effect of gravity over many centuries.

PS - Am assuming you meant to put this on the Kettle Diary. ("Dull Mens Club" is the clue). Go down a storm there, they love that sort of stuff, kettles, end caps, a bit of copper tube, bla bla bla.

People who get angry about this stuff REALLY annoy me. Everyone knows what they mean and they aren't holding themselves out to be experts. Journalists are one thing but greasy spoon cafés don't specifically recruit English Language graduates. Stop being dicks!
Apparently, however, it's OK to use capital letters on each word in a subtitle... Who knew?

When I got thrown out of The Rio, on the last night, I went across to the Gold Coast. It is probably less of a walk from there to the Cardroom than from my room at The Rio.
Got a nice room, the place is clean, has an unbranded Starbucks (Java), and was generally excellent.
Can't believe Channing or Marky did not suggest the place originally.

The Group of Companies I worked for had extensive business interests in the North East, (Consett mainly) & I had an office there, too, in Chester-le-Street.
We all shared the cost of Corporate Facilities @ Roker Park (such as they were) & later, at Stadium of Light, so I often went to games there, & always attended the games v Newcastle. To entertain our Clients, you understand. No point being a Company Director if you don't take those perks.....
Roker Park was an incredible place to watch football.
