Because cigarette smoking, which I do, with much guilt I freely admit, does not generally lead to wasted lives, crime (to feed the habit), & dreadful personality changes. I have "normal" friiends who act weird & peculiar, totally obnoxiously & "difficult", & are not at all themselves after cannabis use, & I don't much respect that.

I'm afraid we'll never agree on this. I think cannabis use, leading so often as it does to full-on drug use, is a bad thing. Show me someone (except when used medicinally) whose body benefits from drug use?

Of course it's illogical & stupid that I smoke. That does not make it right though.

I certainly see where you're coming from from the tobacco perspective. I think where we may disagree is that it "does not generally lead to wasted lives." My grandad died at 60, purely due to smoking. Tobacco cost him 20 years of his life, and 20 years of watching his grandkids grow up. Unlike cannabis, Tobacco is super addictive, and even when they told him he'd die if he didn't quit, he still couldn't stop smoking.

For the record, I'm not a cannabis smoker. I rarely smoke cannabis, and if I do, it is a one off. However, if someone wishes to smoke cannabis in their own private time, then I don't see why we should prohibit them. No one (except when used medically) benefits physically from smoking cannabis, but no one benefits from sitting on their ass watching TV and eating pizza, but we don't stop them from doing it.

As for Tighty's comment, I think it may have wooshed me, but if it's an alcohol reference, I, again, rarely drink. I actually share tikay's views and experiences on alcohol from earlier on in this thread. We see things exactly the same on that issue.

No, you're putting words in my mouth. I'm not a fan of either, hence why I don't personally indulge in smoking habits, but I do believe that if people want to physically harm themselves behind closed doors via smoking, then that should be up to them. I'm certainly not convinced that cannabis necessarily leads to more harmful drugs, but I don't have the stats at hand.

Resident Dutch guy to the rescue. It has actually been proven that in a normal situation the use of soft-drugs (Like cannabis) does NOT lead to the use of hard-drugs. However, when cannabis is illegal it puts you in touch with some people that you probably don't want to be in touch with..and THAT makes the use of hard drugs more likely.

I used to frequent a coffeeshop regularly and EVERYONE there knew not to mess with hard drugs..and you'd never consider it simply because you're not put in that sort of environment.
The hard drugs problem in the UK is massive compared to what it is in Holland..Cannabis being illegal is definitely one of the reasons for this.
