Since we are (sadly) without Mere, do you want me to do the sums and reckoning up who's lost what and stuff this year?

I won't need all those spread sheets and shite, I can do it more or less roughly spot on in my head.

Morning Tom.

Excellent timing, that. I was going to write to Mere this morning, & ask him if he would do his usual job, which he has done every year for us.

To be honest, I was not relishing the prospect of writing to him just because I needed a favour, it did not feel right. I do keep in touch with him from time to time, & would love to see him back, but I don't want to put him in an awkward spot where it's an embarrassment to decline & he does it under duress.

So yes please, if you could look after things, I'd appreciate it.

I assume you are aware that the Job Brief includes Stake Arbiter/Umpire/Referee? We have never had a dispute, but that's partly because Mere was always very clear with rulings. And things do change as we go along - extra or missed events, rebuys, swaps, that sort of thing.

One area you will need to look at is exchange rate. The General Election takes place during this stake, & it's quite likely we will see some currency fluctuations, so we need a policy for both ends of the equation. I don't want either side to be advantaged or disadvantaged by currency movements, we just need to do it in a way that is fair to all.

Most investors are buying a %, which is fine, but we'll never have a firm, fixed total sum, so their stakes will need to be pro-rata.

Thanks Tom.

PS - There is a link at the bottom of my posts to last year's Spreadsheet which may prove helpful.

Sorry Tone, you were too slow off the mark. It would have been a piece of cake for a man of my talents but unforch I've been head-hunted to do a bit of behind the scenes stuff at this place.

I can't really talk about it obv. Suffice to say it is a matter of national security.

List of Stakers as of 10.30am 7th May

Note that these are provisional only, everyone is BOOKED but nobody is committed.

In a week or so, we'll sort out the payment details & dates.

It's great to see so many season ticket holders on the list, too.

booder 1%

redsimon (via PM) 1%

Longines 1%

KarmaDope 1%

Marky147 1%

SteveSwift 1%

Supernova 1%

Mohican 1%

Ch10mpy 2%

bobalike 2%

Markycash 1%

NewportLad 1%

Machka 2% (Aaron, if you really want 5%, it's not a problem, a few of the bigger buyers such as Mere are likely to be AWOL this year so there should be enough)

Animalpoker 1%

Engy 1%

HutchGF 1%

(19% booked)

£200 worth if you please Mr K.

In that case can I make it 5%.

If Mere is not available to run the spreadsheet this year and nobody else steps up (unless RED-DOG is released from his national security obligations) then I will give it a shot.

Can't guarantee Mere's usual witty analysis, effeciency or accuracy, but you get what you pay for right?

I liked this photo from this weekends Buffet annual shareholder meeting.

Simply amazing.

Some 40,000 people attend the Berkshire Hathaway Shareholders Meeting every year. Doubt any Shareholders Meeting anywhere on earth gets 1% of that number.

Messrs Buffett & Monger are masters of communication.

Even more amazing is that you need a share in the co to go to the meeting, each are currently costing $250,000 !

1% or £100 (whichever is easier for the admin side of things).

Can Jeeves not sort it all out for you? He/she will have to earn their wage this year. Keeping you out of trouble off the tables will probably be a full time job for them anyway. Wink

Was trying to remember which was the first online bookmaker / poker site to sponsor you?

Was it Sporting Options?

Close Keith - it was Sporting Odds, who were part of Sporting Bet iirc.

I was having a meal in Vienna one night with Rhowena & Dave Colclough when a perfect stranger approached me & offered me the deal, & he said his boss, Mark Blandford, had suggested he cut a deal with me. He said "I'll pay you a two-er to write a column for Sporting Odds once per month".

I assumed he meant £200, so I accepted, & sent off the first piece the next day. 2 days later he sent me not £200, but £2,000. That continued for some time, £2k every month, tyvm.

They used to send me to places like Monte Carlo to buy in & "host" qualifiers, & they would put me up at the Hermitage.

Sporting Odds was owned by Mark Blandford & was one of a family of business under the Sporting Bet umbrella, see;

One of the key strategies Blandford used to grow SportingBet was the acquisition of other companies operating in the gambling market. The acquisitions he approved included Betmaker, Sportsbook, Number One Betting Shop, and Sporting Odds. At one point, SportingBet was the largest internet gambling group in the world.

A particularly notable acquisition was in 2004, when SportingBet purchased Paradise Poker. At the time Paradise was a major poker site and was particularly popular in the United States. However, in 2006 Paradise Poker had to stop taking deposits from US customers following the introduction of online gambling legislation in the region. At around the same time, SportingBet sold all of its US facing betting and casino operations

From;

https://www.gamblingsites.com/bio/mark-blandford-sportsbookcom/

Mark Blandford is a terrific guy & a perfect Gent. He was amongst the first to realise that the way forward for poker & Sports Betting was Online, & so he sold his chain of High Street LBO's to the Tote in 1997 & started Sporting Bet, which, at one time, was the largest Internet Bookie in Europe, if not the world. They must have been amongst the largest online poker sites, too, as they owned Paradise Poker who were very big (relatively) at the time.

Then - I don't recall the exact coup, but Sporting Odds fell foul of the US Gaming laws & his business partner was arrested whilst entering the US. Somehow the business (Sporting Odds) went into liquidation, & Mark re-purchased the assets for $1. This caused a bit of a shit-storm as I recall.

I once had to buy Mark Blandford into a £1k Event at Walsall on behalf of Sporting Bet one year & generally look after him for the evening. He arrived late (late arrival meant disqualification in those days of course), & he explained his tardy arrival time by telling me he had been to watch his Greyhound run somewhere in the morning, & then to Newbury Races in the afternoon to watch a Novice Chaser he owned make it's chasing debut. I recall thinking "what a life" & was in awe of him.

We remained friends for many years.

He is closely connected to the Scudamore family, (one of them is his Godparent) & had his first winner at the Cheltenham Festival 2 years ago, "Next Sensation", see;

http://www.herefordtimes.com/sport/11860545.Mark_Blandford_delighted_after_Next_Sensation_wins_at_Cheltenham_Festival/#

I'm pretty sure he owns a piece of Hereford FC too, judging by his Twitter feed - @BlandfordMark

Incidentally, the vacancy I filled at Sporting Odds arose as the previous incumbent - Vicky Coren -  had moved on to better things.

What an act to follow that was.

No man with less poker ability than me ever had so many nice little deals with poker sites.

No idea how these things happen. Right time & place, and luck I suppose.  Certainly not poker ability.

Whatever were you thinking to ask that question, Keith? Were you comparing me to Danny Negreanu maybe?

When I was a little boy, not much excited me more than the sounds, sights & airy light of a good railway station first thing in the morning.

Nearly 70 years later, that excitement is just as high.

Jealous, anyone?
