I have been to see exactly ONE Rugby Union match in my entire life, it was at Twickenham 30 years or so ago & it was a Business thing.

I've watched thousands of "live" football matches, & many thousands more on TV.

And yet, when England football team are on TV I cba to even watch them, they hold zero interest to me.

And yet I watched the England Rugby Union Team yesterday morning enthralled by every minute & shouting at the screen.

I'm not sure what that says about Association Football - or me - but it's a bit weird.

On my way home from Manchester after the weigh in, if all had gone well and I'd had a 'Good do' with no rejects for seized cranks or cracked blocks, my absolute favourite thing was to stop at one of the new fangled Little Chef restaurants.

Even though it might be afternoon this would be my first meal of the day. I would order the legendary Olympic Breakfast, (Such decadence) a pot of tea and three slices of bread and butter.

Then I would sit for at least an hour, eating my breakfast, drinking my tea, smoking a couple of cigarettes and reading my book.

It really doesn't get any better than that.

Was "Olympic Breakfast" the most famous restaurant meal ever? Soon as I read your words "Little Chef" I insta thought of Olympic Breakfast.

This is exactly like me, one 6 nations game in a corporate box at Twickenham. Don't watch any club rugby but watch most England games. Only tend to watch England football at championships

Ha!

Same as that, and used to love those little spuds.

There used to be a couple of those between Dorch/Southampton. One before you hit Ringwood going up, and one at the top of the hill as you came off the M27 coming back.

When I sold used car engines to a firm in Manchester for export there was a deadline after which they were worthless.

If I had a nice order, perhaps 1300cc minis with 4 synchro box, I would leave it as long as I dare before 'weighing in'.

Typically I would set out for Manchester in my fully laden* Bedford TK at around 5am on the very last day.

I used to go 'Over the tops', usually via the Snake pass or Woodhead.

What fabulously exciting roads they were, especially in winter if it started to snow.

Would the road be closed?
Would I get stuck?
Would the truck break down?
Would I get stopped by the Old Bill?

I was like the original ice road trucker. What an adrenalin rush that was.

OMG! The nostalgia is almost more than I can bear.

Did you deliberately put it on the Interesting Diary Tom?

Very nice post, if I may say so, & almost up to the required standard here.

Yes. You fired me up with your post. The A57 was my A4.

Good stuff, I get the connection now. Strange how roads from back in the day can be so evocative.

How many times in your life have you driven across Snake Pass & Woodhead Pass? Bet it's a time or two.

Used to love driving over Woodhead. Must have pulled 40 ton over there nigh on a thousand times. Can only remember two occasions when i was seriously delayed, once due to an accident and once due to snow.

My memory may be playing tricks, but I have a recollection that sheep used to roam across the road, might have been Woodhead Pass though.

That Clapton documentary was compulsive viewing Tony.

It was the booze that was his undoing rather than any drugs and for a far greater period of time.

Great Canal Journeys on Channel 4 strikes me as your sort of thing Tikay.

Last nights episode was an absolute tear jerker. Prunella Scales is succumbing to dementia whilst her husband (Timothy West) takes her on their final boating trips.

What a great episode it was and real picture postcard view of the British countryside.
