Very old people who drive very slowly are the most dangerous motorists imo.
The ones who wear special gloves for driving orchestrate maximum havoc whilst remaining completely oblivious.
I agree. while I have never been involved in a serious road accident all of my near misses have involved either ridic slow drivers or, on several occassions, horse and carts

By the bye, while I was looking for that pic of Bongo's car, I found this horror pic.
Speed kills kids. Kids. Slow down, ffs.
Remind me to tell you a story about Forums (Fora?) tonight. I discovered an amazing thing today.
Fk me. I tailed you from Cardiff once. You were like Nigel Mansell on crack!
You were lucky to even be able to follow me, having locked yourself out of your Car in the Car-Park. I think Thewy & Chili were in my car that day, or was it Tom?
Could be any of those three, possibly Thewey and Tom as they finalled, if I recall correctly. Julian had a monster chip lead throughout and was destined for victory, until Ed Arees turned the tables on him heads-up.
I travelled alone that day (I think tikay did too) I wrote it up when I got home. It's over two years ago now, how time flies when you're having fun.

The Aviary in the foreground is only 50 years old, & has a huge & eclectic range of birds, including Cockatoos (or was it Cockatiels?), Canaries, Mynah Birds, LoveBirds, & plenty others I've forgotten.
When I was married we kept Cockatiels.
My ex-wife had a Cockatoo
.

TK - as a civil engineering type person, you'll appreciate this. Next time you're at the Arboretum, go up to the top and look across the street at the front of Nottingham High School. It's an interesting building - the
ground
floor was added some years
after
the building was constructed.
The main door in the centre used to be at ground level. No mention of this piece of trivia is in the wikipedia article, interestingly. I think it was done late 19th century.

That is Kewl.
I did some work for the Royal Horticultural Society, and we often had meetings at Kew. Unfortunately, it always seemed to be 'out of season' when I was there, and I was always underwhelmed by it. This treetop walkway looks good though.

I just had a call from Thewy (on another matter) & I asked him where he was today.
"In Barcelona, playing the WPT" said G-B.
I never even realised it was on. Apparently today is Day 1a, & there are about 100 runners. Day 1B is tomorrow, & 200 are expected.
He told me he's been playing 2 hours, & are currently on break. They began with 15k, & he told me he's been "sitting quietly".
He must think I was born yesterday, pft.

must admit id thought barcelona had been dropped as WPT retreated to be a "north american" poker tour in its current season. Pass on good luck message to JT if you can.

The Post about the bizarre construction of Nottingham High School has got me intrigued - I'm struggling to comprehend how?" & "why". I need to go do some research.
The local topography seems most odd in the surrounding streets, where, in almost every case, Houses, &, for instance, the Park Hotel, seem to sit at a level above the road & pavement, & can only be accessed via stairs, through big retaining walls. All very odd. My curiosity on this needs sating, it's all very strange.

I'm not sure if this may have any bearing on the subject, but the streets around The Arboretum running from Forest Road and The High School down towards the city centre were all cobbled. There are still one or two with the original cobblestones for some stretches.
Also the Forest Road (North) side of The High School is considerably higher than the Arboretum (South) side.

The WPT Barcelona has been dropped as in NOT being televised. It is still a yearly tournament though - bit strange.

I've started to bone up on my latest Hero, who is a Legend in every sense - Charles Darwin. What a man! Right up there with Brunel.
His round the world trip, "Voyage of the Beagle" must have contributed more to Man's uderstanding of our Earth than any other voyage of discovery. Took 5 years, & I think he done it again, later, & wrote scores of books as a result.
It would take too long to discuss even a fragment of his life, & dicoveries, here.
But here's a few of his Book Titles, which make me so wish I lived in those days, when life was so different. They don't make book titles like this any more - or even books, it's all pish-fisction now, which folks seem to find more interesting. We live in strange times.
A Monograph of the Sub-class Cirripedia, with Figures of all the Species. The Lepadidae; or, Pedunculated Cirripedes
A Monograph on the Fossil Lepadidae; or, Pedunculated Cirripedes of Great Britain
A Monograph of the Sub-class Cirripedia, with Figures of all the Species. The Balanidae (or Sessile Cirripedes); the Verrucidae, etc.
On the Tendency of Species to form Varieties; and on the Perpetuation of Varieties and Species by Natural Means of Selection (un-published).
On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life
(worth a read, I'm told, great story-line).
On the various contrivances by which British and foreign orchids are fertilised by insects
The Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation to Sex
Movement and Habits of Climbing Plants
The Effects of Cross and Self Fertilisation in the Vegetable Kingdom
The Power of Movement in Plants
Laughably cumbersom titles, indeed. But he discovered so much of what we take for granted. Cross & self-fertilisation of Vegetables might seem no big deal, but it's incredibly important to life as we know it.
As to "Movements & Habits of Climbing Plants", I imigine it must have been a Best-Seller.
Amazon are on standby for an avalanche of orders.
Here's my favourite - I wonder how many chapters this beauty runs too?
The Formation of Vegetable Mould Through the Action of Worms
I know, you think I'm going la-la. I expect Chili will find all this most interesting though.

Thank you for the Kew Gardens Tree Walkway links & pic.
It used to be called (might still be) "The Royal Botanical Gardens", though we always knew it as "Kew Gardens". It was famously, & until quite recently (around decimilisation times in the 70's I suppose) 1 "old" penny to get in.
Here's what Dawrin had to say on trees. Discuss.
