Just heard the odious piece of scum that is Kelvin MacKenzie saying that it was a sad day for the British press. Sad day for lying scumbags like him.
I met and was interviewed by Kelvin once for a senior position at the wireless group, He struck me as a nice chap, not one to suffer fools gladly and very direct.
Think that helps to prove that interviews are a very poor way for people to determine the other person's character then doesn't it? I'm surprised he'd want to interview a Scot...

Even his transport has a slogan. It reads better when the door is closed, though.

Obama in Germany 2 days ago, in front of what was estimated to be a crowd of over 200,000.
Are there really 200,000 Germans interested in attending a speech by an American Presidential Candidate? Or did the American Embassy impose some sort of 3-line Whip on American ex-pats?
It bothers me when a Prersidential Candidate speaks like a Statesman, or Royalty, too. He begun his speech like this....
"I come to Germany....."
Oh dear, the facade is cracking.
I don't think there was any 3 line whip involved here. Whether we like it or not the US president is the most powerful job in the world and whoever it is, impacts greatly on world politics. Obama (and just about any other democratic candidate) is more in-tune with a European way of thinking compared to Mc Cain. Also no doubt his race does play a part in his celebrity, an afro-american president is something unthinkable until recent years and the fact that this can possibly happen is a positive step forward.
I think he's the right man, (from a poor list of Candidates) & I'm very pro-him.
I just find it hard to believe 200,000, or allowing for Media hype, even half that number, would throng the streets of Germany to catch sight of him, & listen to what we can assume was a typical poltical speech, with all the cliches & rhetoric we come to expect from Politicians. ("I come to Germany", "For Our Children's Chuildren", "For a better America").
Still, his next stop is the UK, so maybe 200,000 will stand & listen to him here. Provided it does not clash with Big Brother, or Celeb Come Dancing.
He is not doing any form of public speech in the uk to be fair, just a few Q & A's outside no.10 AFAIK.

Does that not say more about British cynicism & parochialness (if that's a word?) ?

The famous "Concorde Roundabout" inside Heathrow (before the entrance tunnel) has lost it's centrepiece - the model of Concorde.
The space costs £1,500,000 per annum to rent.
It's been replaced by a Model of the new Emirates A380, of which the Dubai-Based airline have ordered 55. (Proper aircraft, not models).
I can't find a pictrure of the Model (I may pop & take one later today, I'm just round the corner), but the Model is one third scale. And thus, precisely the same size as a full-scale A320, & roughly the size of a 737.
A proper Conxcorde remains parkedf forlornly outside the BA Maintenance Hanger, right opposite my room at Jurys Hotel last night. Awesome.

From an Aviation Geeks Forum I frequent from time to time.
The AP is reporting that an attorney for a female airline passenger in Los Angeles is claiming that security agents gave his client a pair of pliers and forced her to remove her nipple ring in order for her to board her flight. TSA spokesperson Dwayne Baird told the AP that he was unaware of this nipple incident. While the TSA has no specific policy on nipple rings or other body mods, if an alarm is triggered they will be forced to investigate and delay a boarding. Other individuals (non-nipple-ringers) with wedding rings or other rings typically can usually pass through metal detectors without setting them off according to Baird.

This is that Vulcan, at Farnborough last week.
Someone - Tighty, I think - gave me a wonderful book about the Vulcan Bombing raid on the Falklands Islands during that little bit of trouble there a few years back. They needed 17 air-tro-air refuelling sessions to get there & back! The "behind the scenes" story of the H-bomb strike on Hirosahima was no less enthralling.

And this is a somewhat scary pic of that A380 at Farnborough last week. It's hard to get the scale of the aircraft, it's so large.

A better A380 pic insofar as scale is concerned.
