That's a "running-board" - lovely things. Every car should have one.

Kinboshi's bound to claim that this is a reproduction....

Usually on a car of that age ignition advance/retard would be on the steering wheel.

I was hoping someone could tell me that - & maybe Dino has.

I had a nightmare drive from Birmingham to London that day, there was a big crash & traffic jam on the M40, but just seeing, & thinking about, that beautiful old car cheered me up no end.

Yup - no power steering! I imagine a poor turning circle, too.

I never saw the crash, only the aftermath.

The car was a complete wreck, unrecognizable as to make & model, & the Fire Service had cut the roof off entirely, presumably to free the occupants.

Under the circumstances, my cursing & moaning under my breath about the 2 hour delay seems churlish.

A week or two back, I endured another 2 hour delay, on the M1 in Nottingham, & again, silently cursed about the imposition on my time.

I found out the next day that it was the "Mick Channon crash", & sort of shrugged my shoulders, "so what?".

The next day I spoke to an extremely upset Compo. The driver of the car in the Channon crash, who died, was a very long-standing Bloodstock Agent friend of Compo's.

We see these crashes & tragedies, & they can appear meaningless - until we look behind the tragedy & realise that these folks may be strangers to us, but they have near & dear & loved ones.

We are all so engrossed in our own little lives.

Is anybody watching that fantastic series on TV - Banged Up Abroad? Just caught the latest episode about the journalist from Wolverhampton and thought it was excellent. The gesture Noshad made was very humbling.

For anyone who didn't watch it, in 2002 Amardeep Bassey a British journalist travelled to Pakistan intending to get into Kabul, Afghanistan and write a story about life there after the war. He was put in touch with Noshad who was the son of a tribal elder who agreed to guide him to Kabul and back. He did not do this for any money. He did it because Amardeep needed help and he was in a position to help him. Amardeep was seriously apprehensive about the risks he was taking but Noshad assured the writer he would stick with him throughout. Although they managed to get to Kabul and back without major incident Amardeep Bassey was arrested trying to re-enter Pakistan where he was accused of being an Indian spy. He was suddenly in a whole world of pain facing 15 years in a Pakistani jail where the conditions were sickening.

The thing that made me marvel though was that before the Brit was taken to prison the authorities turned to Noshad and told him he was free to go because it had nothing to do with him. But Noshad declined this offer and went to prison with a petrified Amardeep. Why would he do that? He doesn't know this guy and he's not getting paid. But he gave this guy his word he would stick with him and that's what he intended to do. Even when things got seriously hot Noshad's word was his bond. Noshad had a good reputation and a lot to lose by vouching for a guy who could well have been a spy for all he knew. But Noshad trusted the British journalist he had just met and had made him a pledge that was going to remain firm even if it meant 15 years in prison.

We hear about the badness in people a lot. Well take a look at the good. What stunning things good humans are capable of. Would you go to prison for 15 years with a stranger if you didn't have to purely because you told him you would if it came down to it? Nice to think you would. Needless to say Amardeep and Noshad have a magical lifelong bond between them.

yes, its a great program and a must watch for younger people of some of the dangers to be wary of while abroad.
most of the stories have been about drug smuggling ,there has been a lot of nightmare stories of scared people alllowing themselves to be used as mules,.always reminds me of the 70s film midnight express, ross kemp has shown the conditions in many prisons around the world, they are horrific and you would have to be either very naive or absolutely stupid to try and smuggle drugs in these countries ,i think most are naive at first, then later too scared to refuse the drug smugglers,
