to save me rereading the last 15 pages can you remind me of the exact criterion for this top 10 please

Top Ten News Stories of your time.

In practice, it breaks into two (though one will do unless you are on a par with my geekyness), being.....

"Insta-Stories". e.g., 9/11, MJ's death, Iranian Embassy Siege, GTR.

"Slow-Burners". e.g., The Thatcher Years, The Evolution of the Internet, The Decline in Moral Standards, Will Boly ever get a blonde T-Shirt, Credit-Crunch, Katie & Andre.

I think you'd actually come up with a very original list. We shall see, I hope.

[pedantic rant]

Tikay would have been implying not inferring.  Not that he was implying or inferring anything of course.

The person speaking or writing does the implying, the reader or listener does the inferring.

[/pedantic rant]

Yes, I stand corrected.

I was correcting Claire, but it needed saying Cheesy.

Iranian Embassy siege/storming.

Good one.

It was one of those "I reccall what I was doing when the story broke" news stories.

Sunday evening, about 19.25pm, middle of the Snooker World Championship Final, in which either Alex Higgins or Jimmy White was playing.

The key to the story was the emergence into the public eye of the SAS, who, until then, very few had heard of.

It had a lovely twist to it, too. It was a stupendously brave Operation by the SAS. Part of their remit was to "in the course of combat" accidentally ensure that all the Hostage-Takers got killed. Very killed, if you get the drift.

And they did all get killed - except one, who had masqueraded as a hostage, until apprehended later. But by then, he could not be "accidentally" shot, so he became a problem. Over the years, that one little error became a VERY big problem indeed.

A very "enjoyable" news story, as it happens, & another twist was the "Beat-Bobby" who got caught up in it, proper Dixon of Dock Green character he was too - but exceedingly brave.

These "prompts" are marvellous, thank you all, it's lovely to go back over them.

100% correct of course. Are you morphing into Bainn?

I made an incorrect inferrence from Tikay's post, as I inferrred that he had implied what I thought he had implied due to the word 'fellow' preceding the adjective 'angry'. It's is apparent that my inferrence was erronous and the implication misleading or, indeed, non-existant.

You know it makes sense.

Poll tax riots, miners strikes.

I might include the Miners Strike, though as I said before, it may belong in "The Thatcher Years", though perhaps it's worth being a stand-alone.

What great TV & Print Media coverage it got, & what a figure Scargill cut, with everyone loving him or hating him. Nobody was ambivelant towards Scargill. The sub-plot was the battle between the NUM & DUM (?), and as I was working in Nottingham & Yorkshire at the time, I got to see & know a lot of the characters. Interesting to reflect upon it now, & Thatcher, hate her all you like, got it right, the Government could not subsidise it forever. These days no Prime Minister would dare make such a stand.

Poll Tax. No, I would not include it on principle, because the whole thing angered me so much, then as now. Rates, Poll Tax, it made no difference, we have to pay for our LG services, but it was a stick to beat Thatcher with, & the Media expolited it shocking, stirring up unrest.

Michael Jackson, just in terms of sheer media coverage?

The baby p case?

(please someone cut their ears and nose of whilst theyre in jail) dont river me

I cannot include MJ, as I've not followed a word of the story, & I don't give a toss about him, a knitting patern would interest me more.

BabyP. No, but funny you should say that. "Reporting restrictions" have now been lifted, so the papers have all splashed it today & yesterday, big time. But their names were available from Day One, all over the Internet, because the law cannot control the Internet. So the Media is arguing that Reporting Restrictions no longer work, & as such, should be scrapped.

Anarchy is just around the corner, & you ain't gonna like it one bit, boyz.

I thought the whole miners strike episode was very ironic - the miners making a stand for the working class which in turn, through enormous overtime claims and overnight stays, led to the police officers being able to afford new houses, cars, and foreign holidays.
