Recently I've read a biography of Oscar Hartzell, ever heard of him Tikay?

This is the first paragraph of the sleeve note to give you an indication.

"Over the course of twenty years from 1914 to 1933, Oscar Hartzell conned millions of dollars from tens of thousands of trusting, innocent people.

And when he was caught, they gave him more"

If you haven't I'm sure you've got the time to fit that book in sometime Cheesy

No, I don't know it, but I'll but it & take it for the flight to Vegas.

I've revisited some GREAT books on scandals recently.

LTCM, that was THE greatest story of all, Leeson & Barings, Solly (Salomon Bros), Boesky, Liars Poker, John Stonehouse, Barbarians at the Gate, Maxwell/Pergamon Press.

LTCM tops the lot though, it's a stunner, & I read it in one sitting!

Then there's the guy - Sanford? - who conned so many, including rthe ECB, I've not seen a book on that yet, sadly.

Read it NOW. You won't regret it.

Billions of $$$'s leveraged over & over again on a tinsy winsy asset base. And when it went wrong, when the "100 year swing" arose, the thing crashed down in incredible style.

When they did the Post-Mortem, they found that all the computer models for stock & bond trading arbitrage were based on "worst case" being based on a 25% swing. So the 50% swing was a bit of a problem......

Buffett nearly ended up buyinbg it for Berkshire Hathaway, but he was on a bad "mobile" up in Alaska Sound, & by the time he was in contact, it was all over. He never dodged Salomon Bros though, which was "rotten to the core", but he came clean with the SEC & FED, & cleansed it from top to bottom, & made a huge profit in the end.

PS - LOVE your sig!

I've got the gist of the LTCM thing from the references Taleb made to it in his books - so I got the book about it for the meat.

On the sig front I feel a bit of a fraud now as I'm referencing a reference...

Nah, trains are just my stage image. We celebs all have to have image, you know.

Completely unrelated, but I had BIG trub with the police, after I was reported for driving away without paying for fuel. (Now up to FOUR times).

They said the bill was £85. I said my car never takes that much.

They said the car was a 5 series BMW. I said it was a 3 series. "Could be either" said arsey bloke. (It's all on CCTV).

They said the car was BLUE. "It's black" I said. "Light black", says Mr Mardarse. "LIGHT black? Black is black is black" I say. "They look similar, could be either" says he.

I asked what the driver looked like. "Dark-haired, 6'-2"".

Get out of that.

Amazingly, the prosecution has not been cancelled. "It's YOUR car reg Sir".l

Think you mean "A Forest" or "The Walk" by The Cure - two different songs.  Both excellent though.

It is a really good story and a good read, a very good non fiction book which I thought you might like

by the way, I heard about him and the biography because it was referenced in a fiction novel - there is a point to reading fiction as well you see Smiley

Unless American Beauty is a true story, I'm guessing there is a small spot for fiction on Tikay's radar.
