You'll be pleased to hear that my butcher closes at around 1pm. on a Thursday.

Splendid!

Do you still have "Bonfire Day" (Thursdays) in your neck of the woods, Ralph?

We never needed to recycle, we just burnt everything. Less landfill, more smog.

No, I've never heard of that one.

It's got Johnny Vegas AKA "the oracle" in it

Just watch it

Johnny Vegas & "oracle" - unless it's that Teletext thing - mean nothing to me.

If it's a film, I'll swerve it, but thanks for the nod John.

I find that rather pleasing, though I'm not quite sure why. Another circle turning, maybe?

I don't know if this has been mentioned before but as there is a steam train I will mention it. At Waterloo station they are performing the Railway Children including a Steam train which I think was from the film. Well acted and a bit of nostalgic fun.

Good spot, Tom, saved me correcting him.

When will peeps learn the difference between a train & a locomotive, between cement & concrete, tiles & slates, ceiling & roof?

Series Tikay.

Very funny but not sure if it'd be your cup of tea.

I think you are right. TV "Series" & suchlike don't float any boats for me. I enjoyed Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy (?), with that famous actor, & "Budgie", with Adam Faith & Charlie "I'll break your bloody legs" Enderby  though.

There was another TV Series back in the 70's or 80's called "Law & Order" I think, about bent coppers, crooks, & dodgy briefs, which I loved.  The lead actor later became one of the main roles in Eastenders.

And a BBC comedy drama with Billy Connolly as a sort of hard man in it, "Blue Moon" or similar.*

Wiki tells me it was called "Blue Money".

This reminds me, I saw a story in an old issue of our local newspaper.

I've found this extract of it:
Quote
23/07/1850

The Hastings benefit societies organised a non-profit day-out excursion to Brighton and Shoreham, with 1,247 passengers aboard a 37-carriage train, hauled by two engines.

But there was no picture in the paper - does anyone know of any picture of a train similar to that one?

I struggle to believe that. 37 carriages?

Other articles suggested that 20 carriage trains were relatively common during the height of the season, but you can see why this one stood out.

Obviously this was reported by a journalist - so you never know; for all I know there were two trains but the journo decided that wasn't a good enough story Cheesy

37 carriages would not work in those days imo John, which was before braked rolling stock & the invention of the vacuum brake. Even 20 sounds far-fetched.

As you suggest, Journos are all shite, except Barry Carter, of course.

Talking of Journos, anyone hear Desert Island Discs last week, with Lynn Barber as the Castaway?

Her "greatest pop record of all time" was "Common People", by Pulp. Which is good, but......

Bedford KB's had vacuum brakes, which worked from a device called an exhauster, which was basically a pump in reverse. TK's on the other hand, had air brakes.
