I don't know if this has been mentioned before but as there is a steam train I will mention it. At Waterloo station they are performing the Railway Children including a Steam train which I think was from the film. Well acted and a bit of nostalgic fun.
This reminds me, I saw a story in an old issue of our local newspaper.
I've found this extract of it:
Quote
23/07/1850
The Hastings benefit societies organised a non-profit day-out excursion to Brighton and Shoreham, with 1,247 passengers aboard a
37-carriage train
, hauled by two engines.
But there was no picture in the paper - does anyone know of any picture of a train similar to that one?
I struggle to believe that. 37 carriages?
Other articles suggested that 20 carriage trains were relatively common during the height of the season, but you can see why this one stood out.
Obviously this was reported by a journalist - so you never know; for all I know there were two trains but the journo decided that wasn't a good enough story
37 carriages would not work in those days imo John, which was before braked rolling stock & the invention of the vacuum brake.
Bedford KB's had vacuum brakes, which worked from a device called an exhauster, which was basically a pump in reverse. TK's on the other hand, had air brakes.
Watch out Tank, Andrew, Tighty - that one is briliant, VERY clever!

Err, no, Mondy, I'd never heard of him. I did a quick scan of Wiki Quotes, & he's not really my thing. Mr Hicks won't displace Morecambe & Wise in my bookmarked Tubes.

Nope, never heard of him, he's never appeared on my radar. I guess I've lived a sheltered life.
We seem to have got by without each other.
I'm sad that he died so young, though.

) I've been watching a lot of Curb your enthusiasm the last couple of days,I wasn't sure how to take him at first but I've grown to really like him,he's very dry humour but very funny imo, plus I think the theme tune is the best for any show ever.

Do you remember the classic film' The Wicker man' from the 70's Tony?
Edward Woodward plays a police officer that goes to a remote Scottish Island to search for a missing girl and finds that a religious cult are planning to sacrifice her and it becomes a race against time to find her before the kill her.It ends up with a superb twist in that he is the person they want to sacrifice and he has been lulled there with the sole aim of killing him instead of the girl because they know his morals and beliefs will make him strong enough to try to do the right thing.
I saw this article today about a remote Scottish island view on the Sabbath and it made me think how we have gone full circle in thinking,as it's not so long ago that Sunday was a day of worship and rest, with services not available because it was a protected day.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/aug/01/golfers-sabbath-ban-stornoway
The view expressed by 'the lords observance society' in that article now seem as obscure to most people as the religious cult's beliefs in the Wicker Man but it can only be 20 years since they were the norm almost everywhere.
Hi Phil,
No, I never saw it. I never really got into watching films.
Your point as to how things have changed - & in some cases gone full circle - has exercised me enormously of late. (A typical age thing, I suppose).
Sunday, yes, Shops were not allowed to open on "the Sabbath" not so long ago. I actually got prosecuted for selling non-perishable goods on a Sunday, & later charged with Contempt of Court when I tried to get smart by ostensibly "selling" tomatoes, & giving away the products I was selling (DIY goods) for free. If I were genuinely Jewish, I could have traded, in fact. I tried that, too, but got caught out on a minor physical detail.
"Early Closing day" (Wednesday or Thursday mostly) have disappeared, too.
I was reminded yesterday of a most peculiar phenomenon that arose in 1968, after Devaluation - "I'm Backing Britain". We all worked an extra hour per day, for free, "for the Nation". A compete nonsense really, but it did generate a wonderful feel-good factor, similar to after the '66 World Cup, or post-Falkland. It all ended on a sour note, though, when the Unions got arsey.
A decade or two later, the Internet started to come into common use, & 5 years later, late 90's I think, Online Poker was "invented".
Online Poker then boomed & boomed, until the last year, when overall revenues & traffic began a significant decline, & nobody seems to be able to predict when the graph will change direction, or even if it will.
Full circle is one thing, but it's the speed of change which is so remarkable.
lol, i love the ides of you doing s 'del boy' selling toms and giving away a hammer with them etc etc.
I read a great quote from Jose Mourinho today, he is in the US with his new Real Madrid team and had an open training day for the local fans and media to attend. At the end he and his fitness guru were asked why the players did only skill work and group defending exercise and didnt do any hard running as part of their fitness training and he replied. 'You wouldnt ask a pianist to run around his piano would you' which I thought was a good line.

I was giving away Hadfields Paint, Sapele Doors (all the rage in those days), & boxes of GKN 3/4 8's as makeweights for geraniums & toms.
I opened one of the first ever DIY Stores in London, that was where it went off.
Barely took a penny all week, & I happened to be in the (closed) Shop one Sunday morning, & folks kept tapping on the door. So I opened for business, & within weeks, every Sunday morning, the roads all around (it was in Blackhorse Lane, Walthamstow), were chock-a-block, which was what aroused the local council's interest.
Soon, Texas Homecare, B & Q, Homebase etc were all at it.
We ran well for 3 months or so, but the court stuff got too heavy, paying weekly fines was OK, but Contempt of Court is the tricky one, you get sent down for that. The Business (it was named "ARC CENTRE" after the three founders, three East London wide boys, Jack Allitt, Bill Read & Barry Cordial, who I worked for) then hit another prob when the kid I employed to help out started pocketing the takings. Jack, Bill & Barry were not too impressed with that.
I worked for them for 19 years, eventually I lost touch with Bill. Barry grimmed me for my life savings & more - £29,000 - every penny I had in the world, car & house, too. I kept in touch with Jack until he died, & utterly loved the man, it was he who taught me about life with rough edges.
He was uneducated, but sharp as a tack, he had a very poor vocabulary, but one that worked. He was a spread (plasterer) by trade, & he coined the term for a rough-cast finish as "rubbed up with a pineapple", which everyone understood.
It was during the Harold Wilson inspired Hotel boom of the 70's, (he gave a £1k per room grant to Hoteliers to add more rooms) & the three of them made an absolute mint before they had a barney, & 2 of them walked.
Bill wanted Cup Final tickets for West Ham v Spurs (or was it v Chelsea?), & I was their "go-to-man", Mr Fixit sorta thing, & I got him three tickets in the Royal Box, which was a story in itself.
